Double NAT

I am reseting my Time Capsule and i have to add a double NAT. What is this and how do I find it?

time capsule and xfinity Hello, I just got xfinity and am using my xfinity as my modem and as my router. Previously I used my time capsule as my router but am using the time capsule only as a back up-its plugged into the the xfinity router via an ethernet cable. Everything is working fine- back ups are happening etc. Here is my question: My time capsule appears to also be acting as a router (its not in bridge mode) I know this because the previous network name when the time capsule was the router is still up and running. My question is- is there a problem with this? I'm not getting a double nat message... Thanks!

added CenturyLink modem/router and can't get the apple airport time capsule into bridge mode (double NAT error) Hi, I recently switched from Xfinity to CenturyLink fiber. I am using a C4000modem/router instead of Netgear router. I attempted to put the CL modem into bridge mode and attach the Apple airport time capsule (and airport extreme as extender) with an ethernet connection. I couldn't get an internet connection and got a double NAT error. I reset the CL modem router to PPPOE (factory setting) and simply connected the airport by ethernet connection. This time it worked fine. But, I have few questions: In this configuration, are the Apple airports (Time Capsule and Extreme) just acting as extenders ( and not as the wireless router)? Is this how it has to be? How would I fix it to work with Airport as router? Although it works in this configuration, my "guest network" does not. What changes do I need to see all of my devices on this network (HomePods, etc)? Thanks.

Can’t ping AitPort Time Capsule from internet For example my ip is 1.2.3.4 I run command on my mac to ping it (ping 1.2.3.4) but all packets fails But I can ping it in local network Can enabled NAT-PMP be reason of this?

If you have one router.. and then plug a second router into the first.. you will have a situation called double NAT.

NAT is the actual type of router used in the home setup of connecting many clients to one internet connection.

It is best if you use just one NAT router.. if that is the modem then allow it to be modem router and the Time Capsule can run in bridge mode.

Why do you need to run double NAT? There are situations where it is necessary.. like using cheap end ISP, building ethernet connection, wireless iSP or satellite where they use private IP addresses.. and then double NAT is necessary.

Many thanks. I didn’t know what a NAT was when I set it up but fiddling around with the setup found the answer and all working now
