how do I upgrade from OS 10.10.5 to 10.11 on MacBook Pro mid 2012

After installation of iOS 12 on my iPad and iPhone i can not sync with iTunes anymore.

iTunes needs MacOS 10.11.4 or younger on my MacBook (Yosemite 10.10.5).

But Apple says "Installation of El Capitan is not possible on my MacBook".

Is there any way to install El Capitan?????

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

You are welcome. You are getting that error because your computer can run a newer OS. If you have El Capitan in your Purchases tab of the App Store, download it from there. If that isn't an option, then you will need to try a newer OS. You can try Mojave as previously suggested or try the links below to get Sierra or High Sierra.

Thanks for your fast responce.

I followed your steps and logged in with my Apple ID.

But whenever i tried to download El Capitan i got this answer:

Translation from German to english says This version of OS X 10.11 can not be installed on your computer. Why?

There is no explanation from Apple ......

You also recommended to skip El Capitan and go directly to Mojave.

But all Apple specialists i have asked warned me to be the first installing this new software.

They recommend to wait til other users find out all the bugs ......

I´m confused because i´m a dummy user and just want to use my MacBook, i´m not a developer.

My best regards from Germany

Hi Eric,

thanks for your fast recommendations.

I checked the application compatibility list: OK

I also checked El Capitan compatibility information: OK

I have checked Sierra 10.12. compatibility apps: OK

I have installed printer driver for MacOS 10.11: OK

But the download of El capitan failed with the same message as i wrote Niels before:

(which means that this version of OS X 10.11 can not be installed on this computer, no details if you click on "more information")

So far I´m frustrated because i bought Apple products with "easy to use" label on each Apple product.

That´s what everybody thinks about Apple products.

But now i spend almost Friday, Saturday and Sunday (with low technical background) to get this update done and it does not work.

What do you think of my new idea to set up a windows PC with latest iTunes software beside my MacBook to run the iPhone 6 and iPad backups on the windows PC?

Manfred,

You can upgrade to 10.13 without going to 10.11.

The one thing you have to be concerned about is compatibility with any pre-10.13 devices. 10.13 has a new file system which adjusts the formatting of the drive if it is SSD, making Mac OS X 10.12 and earlier unable to view the drive directly. However, you can always FTP into the drive over a network. Here is the 10.13 update:

Most everything that is 10.12 is 10.13 compatible. Both have the same system requirements.

I would backup your data before proceeding.

It is only the 10.11 update that requires you to have 10.6.8 on your Mac first. Weird requirement from Apple to be certain. At least the 10.13 update does not.
