Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

OS 10.11.6 crashes when I open Downloads Folder

Every time I open the downloads folder my Mac crashes.

15" MBP, early 2011, 8GB, 10.11.6

I have deleted everything from the Downloads folder then downloaded RetroPi and Etcher. Those are the only items in the folder.

As soon as I attempt to do anything in the downloads folder - copy, move, delete - the entire system crashes. Hard freeze that is only fixed by a hard boot.

I can go into terminal and delete files without issue.

I tried to delete the com.apple.finder.plist but I don't have one listed in Library/preferences

I am at a loss.

Thanks in advance.

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.1)

I am not in the users Libray folder.

You are welcome. You are looking in the wrong Library based on what you posted earlier. The com.apple.Finder.plist is in your user Library, not your hard drive level Library. See my earlier post, part of which is below.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.

Are you looking in your user Library for the .plist?

Do a backup, preferably 2 backups on 2 separate drives.

Re-launch Finder by restarting the computer and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop. Then reset your preferences as desired.

If the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.

Can you access the folder in the Safe Mode?

Your battery is reporting it is failing. You might want to check the site below for a replacement. I been very happy with the service/products I've ordered from them.

Other World Computing

I would uninstall Avast. It tends to interfere with the computer's operation while providing minimal to no benefit unless you work with Windows files. Most long time posters recommend not using antivirus software or cleaning software such as CleanMyMac.

Avast

Avast Un-install

Most posters recommend not using cleaning programs. They can destroy normal computer operations.

I would uninstall Sophos. It tends to interfere with the computer's operation while providing minimal to no benefit unless you work with Windows files.

I am not in the users Libray folder. I just looked on my SOs High Sierra MBP and same thing, no com.apple.finder.plist. Her system is having a version of the same issue and got stuck with the downloads folder open on restart. I started it in safe mode, closed downloads and restarted and so far so gooD (which is why I didn't see your response last night).

I have run virus scans on both and nothing so far (running deep scan now)

Ill run the etrecheck heck when I get home from work.

thank you!

Ok so holding down the option key did the trick

my preferences were all jacked up. I had 15 com.apple.finder.plist files. One "good" one and 14 with random letter/number appendages. Same with dozens of other preference files. All told I had over 150 duplicate files that I trashed. I did it in stages with a trash, restart, check, empty cycle each time just in case I trashed something important. Same was true of my SOs system. It too is now running well.

Thank you for the help
