iTunes not registering iPhone update

All software is updated on both phone (7plus) and mac but when I plug phone in to iTunes on the Mac I get "To use your iPhone with iTunes, you need to install OS X 10.11.4 (or later)". It has OS X 12 on it. I have rebooted everything. Reinstalled iTunes on the Mac. Still nothing which means I can't use my iTunes or back up my phone because I can't get past this. Anyone have an idea how I can fix this please?

Download the current 12.8 installer for iTunes from https://www.apple.com/itunes/download/.

Unlock your iOS device and connect it to USB.

Reinstall iTunes from the .dmg that you've downloaded.

During the installation it should announce that a further software update is required.

Install that and iTunes should see your devices.

The full picture is a little unclear but it seems that iOS 12 may require OS X 10.11.4 El Capitan or better to work with iTunes.

Thank you! This worked exactly as instructed...a first in my experience for apple discussion boards. What I don't understand is why my phone IS STILL recognized on my old computer with 10.8.5 without any message of "To use your iPhone with iTunes, you need to install..."
