iCloud photos on phone and in Photos issue

I have hundreds of photos and videos on my iPhone. I would like to simply have them in my Photos library on my iMac. However, when I go to delete them on my phone it tells me it will delete them from all of my devices. I believe I have everything set up to be in iCloud. But I am quickly running out of iCloud storage space and I want to free some up. I do not however, want to lose my photos and videos. How do I delete them off my phone and make sure they are still in Photos on my iMac? Thanks in advance for your help. I know this is probably and easy answer but with my memories I don't want to take a chance and do it wrong.

That's not the way iCloud Photo Library works. Its goal is to keep all your devices in sync with each other and with the version in the cloud. Additions are added everywhere, changes are changed everywhere, and deletions are deleted everywhere. You have to have enough iCloud storage to hold all of your iCloud Photo Library pictures. Storage use on your devices (such as your phone) can be reduced (but not eliminated) by using the "Optimize ... Storage" option on the device.

If this is not what you want, maybe iCloud Photo Library is not the tool for you.

Can you tell us a bit more about how you are currently using iCloud Photo Library?

Is iCloud Photo Library currently enabled on your iPhone, on your Mac or both?

If iCloud Photo Library is only enabled on the iPhone, but not for your Photos Library on the Mac,

I would create a second, empty library on your Mac. While you are viewing this second empty library, enable it as your iCloud Library on your Mac. Wait for your iPhone pictures to download to this library. Once they have been downloaded to this second library, you can use "File > Export > Export unmodified original" to save the photos and videos in folders on your Mac. Then imort them to yur main Photos library.

Now you can safely delete the photos from your temporary download library, that you do no onger want in iCloud and your iPhone.

But if iCloud Photo Library is also enabled for your large, main Photos Library, post back. Then you need a different approach.

I think you are right. I was using iCloud photo library because it didn't make me upload all my pics from my phone. However, I have over 400G of photos so I can't afford to pay for that much iCloud storage for photos. Can you help me understand how I can turn off iCloud photo's and not lose any of my pictures in Photos? I assume then that once I upload my phone pictures to Photos I can then delete them off my phone and not affect Photos right?

Thank you for your help Leonie! It is only enabled on my iPhone not on my iMac in Photos. I followed your directions. I created a second library, downloaded all of the iCloud pics to it, the did the file/exports/export unmodified original and saved them all in a new folder. However, when I went back into my Photo's library to import them all only 463 out of 14,000ish would import. I got the below message. (This time when I tried to do just one and see if that would work.) Why would it not import when I had just directly exported them from Photos? Why would they be unrecognizable files?

Can you open the exported photos in Preview or are you getting the same error?

Where is the folder with the exported items located, on your system drive or on an external drive? Which system version is running on your iPhone and on your Mac? Which model is your Mac, and which model is the iPhone?

Perhaps the formats are not compatible.

Yes, I tested quite a few and I can open the exported photos in Preview with no errors. I had to put the file I exported to on my external hard drive because I'm running iCloud on my desktop (maybe that's a mistake too?) and there's not room to download the 14K+ photos on my desktop.

My iMac is on macOS High Sierra Version 10.13.6

iMac (27-inch, Late 2013)

Processor 3.2 GHz Intel Core i5

Memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Graphics NCIDIA GeForce GT 755M 1024MB

Photos is on version 3.0

iPhone 8

Verision 12.0

Model MQ7T2LL/A

My confusion comes when I had just exported all of these photos from my iCloud library, which I can view in Photos with no problem, but could not import them in. Maybe I'm doing something wrong but I followed the steps and the steps make perfect sense. The error doesn't make sense to me.

I'm curious also is there a way to see how many of these 14K+ photos have already been imported into my Photos? I assume that if I can get them to import now I will get the message that at least a part of them are duplicates. I'm pretty sure some of them have been imported and are in my Photo library locally, not only in iCloud. My concern is that I will lose any if I delete them off of iCloud and stop using it.

In order to create the new temporary photo library in Photos and use it as my iCloud library the software made me designate the new library as my System Photo Library. I assume that means that iCloud is now not on my old (original) Photo library.

Thank you again for your help with this!

The Mac and the iPhone should be compatible with their current sytem versions.

But perhaps the external drive has a permissions problem. Photos will have permission problems with photos that are stored on a drive, that is also used by Time Machine, or does not have the file system format MacOS Extended (Journaled) or APFS. The external drive must not have a case-sensitive format.

You should be seeing the photos in the Imports album. Also, if you craete a smart album with the rule "Date added is after ..." you can see the recent imports.

Ok, so awesome, I followed your advice and exported the library photos to my computer rather than and EHD. When I imported them it worked. One other question - after importing it said "Already Imported" at the top and then "New Items" right below. Probably stupid question but does that mean that the already imported do not need to be imported again? And will stay in my photo library and not be deleted when I turn iCloud off of my iPhone?

Also just to clarify now that I have imported that temporary library into my Photo library can I now delete the temporary library? Also can I turn iCloud off on my iPhone for Photos and they won't be deleted on my Photos on my Mac?
