Messages going to wrong person

My husband, sons and I are all on one Apple ID, no problems until now. They are all separate contacts on my phone. I tried to message one son, but it went to the other son, came up with his name. The messages are now a mix of messages from both my sons and my husband. I have checked the 'send and receive' numbers and all unchecked which is sometimes where it went wrong. Every time I put my sons number in and start a message it comes up with the other sons messages. I have tried deleting and re-entering his number. Help!

You each need to have your own Apple ID.

There may be some data loss, but you can minimize it. If syncing photos with iCloud, ensure Optimization is turned off in Settings/Your Name/iCloud/Photos and/or in Photos/Preferences/iCloud. Then make sure full resolution photos are on the device/computer. When signing out of iCloud, if asked whether you want to retain data, choose yes. Messages conversations will be lost if they are addressed to the ID. See the article below for other places that the old ID should be removed. Also set up Family Sharing to keep access to your apps.
