How do i get my ipad activated after an updtate?

The error message reads thus:

Your iPad could not be activated because the activation server is temporarily unavailable. Try connecting your iPad to iTunes to activate it or try again in a few minutes.

I have tried this to no avail for about a year.

Please help

Try a reset. Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
