CarPlay Disconnecting - iPhone XS Max

Dear all wise and all knowing Apple Community 🙂

I recently switched from my iPhone 7+ running iOS 12.0 to an iPhone XS Max running iOS 12.0.

I have a 2018 Audi S4 with the latest firmware from Audi.

With the switch to the XS Max, seems that my Apple CarPlay will get into a cycle of disconnecting and reconnecting

every 30 seconds or so.

I tried reverting back to my 7+ and works fine.

1. Siri is enabled.

2. The USB Lockout is turned off on the XS Max. The 7+ had the lockout turned on

but made no difference in the XS Max toggling on or off.

3. Swapped the cables to the one in the box of the iPhone XS Max and USB ports

in the car. This had no impact on the XS Max recycling the connection. The 7+ is uneffected

business as usual.

Not sure if this is tied in with the authentication issue with the charger. I go over wired carplay and the 30

second increment is suspect as that is my lockout time on the phone.

Curious if others are facing this.

Thanks!

Haha, well now it looks like it’s $10 but here’s the link of the one I got:

I’m sure other ones will work too, there are others for cheaper as “add-on’s” if you want one for around $5.

Same issue since I got my XS Max. I’ve had to give up on using the USB port and streaming music over Bluetooth which is not my preference.

My only guess due to the message “power not supported” on the MMI screen is that the XS Max power output might be too high for the Audi? It’s really frustrating and I hope both apple and Audi find a solution fast. I’m tempted to switch back to the regular size XS.

Just want to chime in here and say that I am experiencing the exact same issue as others. I switched from an iPhone X to an iPhone XS Max a couple weeks ago. Never had a problem with my iPhone X and my wife’s iPhone X continues to work without any issues.

I have a 2018 Audi Q7, and iPhone XS Max 512.

Trying out the usb volt meter today and will see if it helps. This is highly discouraging though. Seems like everyone with an Audi is having this problem.

Has anyone reached out to Audi to report this issue? Wondering if they need to fix something on their side.

Also, is anyone a dev here running 12.1.1 beta? Wondering if any fixes are in the works on apple’s side.

I was just asking if anyone had, in fact, contacted Audi. It’s a fair question.

As for the NDA, it absolutely would not be a violation to say whether or not something is being fixed. Please stop lecturing everyone:

Further, Apple agrees that You will not be bound by the foregoing confidentiality terms with regard to technical information about pre-release Apple Software and Program Agreement Page 37 services disclosed by Apple at WWDC (Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference), except that

you may not post screenshots of, write public reviews of, or redistribute any pre-release Apple Software, Apple Services or hardware.

If you read the whole thread you will notice that no one has said they did which is why I made my suggestion to you.

Your interpretation of the NDA and your selected quote is not relevant. I agree that if Apple at the WWDC had stated that iOS 12.1.1 would have a fix for the Audi/iPhone XS problem then someone testing it could post here and say it fixed it. But since there has been no such public release of anything even related to this then posting here (a public place) would be a violation of their NDA. It would not go unnoticed by the hosts here who basically allow no discussion of beta software whatsoever except for how to roll back out of the program and advice to use the Feedback tool if they encounter a problem.

Adding to the growing crowd of very upset people. 2018 Audi A5. Had iPhone X with 12.1. “Upgraded” to iPhone XS Max - CarPlay disconnects more than staying connected. Extremely frustrating. No issues ever with X - CarPlay not staying connected with the XS Max. Impossible to maintain a phone call or use maps without disconnect. Apple - this phone was $1300 - come on do better this needs to be resolved. One of the main reasons I stay with iOS is CarPlay and now that reason is disappearing. Please address this issue as soon as possible.

Hello,

Same problem here between XS Max and Audi A5 2018.

Only this trick has worked for me:

1-put iphone in airplane mode.

2-connect iphone to the usb port of Audi console.

3-wait 2-3 minutes and remove airplay mode.

Doing this carplay did not suffer disconnections in 45 minutes (all the trip).

Do you know if all usb voltage meters solve temporary this issue? I don’t want to waste the money...

Thanks!

Having the same issue with iPhone XS on Audi A4 2017. Even without CarPlay it randomly disconnects for 5-20 seconds, Audi shows "Connected device has a power supply problem and is not supported" iPhone X and iPhone 7 all worked like a charm (maybe this error was once or twice in whole year). Working through CarPlay does not change anything - disconnects the same as CarPlay enabled or as external Media Player.

Really shame, my Audi dealership was not able to help. Contacted Apple Support - they said it is a common issue, but no timetable on resolving.

Did you ask to speak to Tier 2 support or did you talk to a first level support person? If the latter they took your information, a case number was created and it was passed on. Your opinion on how they sounded is irrelevant. I have no issue with someone who has not contacted them before calling and reporting it, or taking it in, and getting a case number generated. But if you have already done so calling again and again, accomplishes nothing other than clogging the system assuming there are enough people to do this. Also posting here accomplishes nothing. Have you also contacted Audi?
