CarPlay Disconnecting - iPhone XS Max

Dear all wise and all knowing Apple Community 🙂

I recently switched from my iPhone 7+ running iOS 12.0 to an iPhone XS Max running iOS 12.0.

I have a 2018 Audi S4 with the latest firmware from Audi.

With the switch to the XS Max, seems that my Apple CarPlay will get into a cycle of disconnecting and reconnecting

every 30 seconds or so.

I tried reverting back to my 7+ and works fine.

1. Siri is enabled.

2. The USB Lockout is turned off on the XS Max. The 7+ had the lockout turned on

but made no difference in the XS Max toggling on or off.

3. Swapped the cables to the one in the box of the iPhone XS Max and USB ports

in the car. This had no impact on the XS Max recycling the connection. The 7+ is uneffected

business as usual.

Not sure if this is tied in with the authentication issue with the charger. I go over wired carplay and the 30

second increment is suspect as that is my lockout time on the phone.

Curious if others are facing this.

Thanks!

So I want to report back and say that so far getting this usb power meter and connecting the phone through it to the car has worked wonders. I haven’t had a power based disconnect since using it.

I have had it not want to work when starting the car once. I had to unplug the power meter and plug it back in a few seconds later and it started working again.

Once my phone connects to CarPlay, I don’t have any issues. I think I’ve driven for about 5 total hours since starting it. This solution is ok for a band aid but I expect way better from Audi/apple and I look forward to not needing to use this workaround.

Has anyone tried using the cable that came with the iPhone XS/ MAX?

I’ve had weeks of issues in my 67 plate Mercedes A class... been using an official iPhone cable albeit the IPhone 7 one... swapped to the official IPhone XS out of the box and I’ve had 3 days of no disconnects and fast connectivity... maybe a fluke but worth a try!!!

To my opining the condition might me linked to a second iPhone connecting or trying to connect through bluetooth.

I have noticed when my second iPhone is connected through bluetooth but no as CarPlay. My primary iPhone XS Max keep on trying to connect but without success: connecting disconnecting etc.

If I turn off the bluetooth of my second iPhone and the car bluetooth stops trying to connect first it stops connecting disconnecting and I then got the message "connect a compatible device" after some time couple of seconds to 1 minute max CarPlay gets connected.

Tomorrow I am planning to try by turning the bluetooth of the car off.

Not sure but I am wondering if apple CarPlay will be connected wireless in new updates.

Just thought I’d toss in my 2¢ here. 2006 VW Jetta owner here (swapped in a newer VW headunit w/CarPlay), who also upgraded from a 7 Plus to an XS Max. My 7 Plus had not one single issue with CarPlay (a year and a half of usage since I upgraded my headunit), and the second or third time I plugged my XS Max into my car, it displayed the connecting message on screen for ~10 seconds (usually only takes one or two when it connects successfully) before it started playing my music, but with no video on screen. The only solution is to restart my phone and then plug it back in. Since then it’s a gamble whether or or not I’ll plug it in and it just works, or I’m forced to reboot and try again. Once it’s connected it does remain connected (thankfully) but I’d say easily more than 50% of the time I’m rebooting it for it to display on screen properly.

Kind of 50/50 results for me since turning the WiFi Off.

Worked fine this morning, but not worked this afternoon.

This is the reply from my local Audi dealership

"The iPhone XS Max unfortunately is an unsupported device currently, so apple have not released the software to us for us to update our system, we are currently still on iPhone 7, with the been the case we cannot guarantee connective functions"

I also had the same issue with the problem being worse when apps were open. Prior to plugging the phone into the car, I close all the applications I have running. Sometimes it seems to help, other times not at all. Waze was the biggest problem, so much so that I had to delete it from the phone.

I have two USB ports in the armwrest with the Apple cable that came with the iPhone XS.

iOS 12.1.3 is working for me in my 2018 Audi A4 allroad. I no longer have the problem with connections to CarPlay with iPhone XS as we’ve all described in these many messages.

However, recurrence of an old problem from earlier versions of iOS has returned, namely that if I’m on a call and then activate CarPlay, the other person cannot hear me but I can hear the other person. This was corrected with an earlier iOS update, but it has returned.

I have what I hope is a bit of good news. I haven’t got a disconnect since installing iOS 12.1 beta 3. I’ve tried every which way to try and break it, including most of the things mentioned here causing issue. Fortunately tomorrow’s schedule has me driving around like I’m an Uber driver, so it should be a good opportunity to find out if the stability is a fluke. Keep you posted.

Update: Running the 12.1 public beta 3 did not solve the issue for me. (IPhone XS Max connected to USB in a 2018 Audi A5 Sportback). I did a hard reset of the phone after installing and I also re-initialized the MMI software on the Audi (hold the two side buttons forward and simultaneously press the control knob). Sometimes I can go for twenty minutes with no problem at all. More often than not, I get sporadic disconnections that last between eight and twenty seconds before returning without my doing anything. There is no clear pattern. I’ve also tried turning off Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, but that doesn’t seem to make a difference. Bottom line: CarPlay appears to be unworkable, at least with a XS Max on an Audi.

Anyone having a different experience?

Same exact experience you are describing. I’m disappointed to hear that 12.1 beta 3 dId not correct the issue. I was encouraged when QandnotU reported that he received no disconnects when moving to 12.1 beta 3. Question for you and the other posters: Did you set up your iPhone XS Max as a new phone or restore it from a backup of your previous phone? Apple Support was indicating that restoring from the backup coiuld have affected the core OS, which is why they recommended to me that I set it up as a new phone.
