CarPlay Disconnecting - iPhone XS Max

Dear all wise and all knowing Apple Community 🙂

I recently switched from my iPhone 7+ running iOS 12.0 to an iPhone XS Max running iOS 12.0.

I have a 2018 Audi S4 with the latest firmware from Audi.

With the switch to the XS Max, seems that my Apple CarPlay will get into a cycle of disconnecting and reconnecting

every 30 seconds or so.

I tried reverting back to my 7+ and works fine.

1. Siri is enabled.

2. The USB Lockout is turned off on the XS Max. The 7+ had the lockout turned on

but made no difference in the XS Max toggling on or off.

3. Swapped the cables to the one in the box of the iPhone XS Max and USB ports

in the car. This had no impact on the XS Max recycling the connection. The 7+ is uneffected

business as usual.

Not sure if this is tied in with the authentication issue with the charger. I go over wired carplay and the 30

second increment is suspect as that is my lockout time on the phone.

Curious if others are facing this.

Thanks!

I solved the problem - at least for me. I have a 2018 A5 which was working just fine with my iPhone X but disconnects regularly with my xS Max.

Until - just the other day - I tried a genuine Apple lightning cable. And voila, problem is solved. I am suddenly having no issues at all, can run as many apps as I want. I even tried running Waze and Apple Maps at the same time and it was rock solid.

I have generally used high quality third-party cables (usually Anker) and have rarely had issues elsewhere. But all I can say is try the genuine Apple cable and see if it helps. It worked for me.

Interesting suggestions! Thanks for posting them.

I will try the phone with a shorter (0.5m) genuine Apple cable, though it will make it impossible to view the device with such a short lead. I still rely on the screen of the phone for many of the apps I use via CarPlay.

I'm skeptical of #2 as not turning on Screen Time allows for all apps to run as normal. Turning on the privacy and security function requires enabling Screen Time, which further requires changes to be made to a number of settings that work fine presently.

I had strong expectations to this update but sadly, my iPhone 8 keeps disconnecting in my Audi A4 Allroad -18 after iOS 12.1.3 update. Same problem and procedure as before. Worked well for the first 4-5 minutes of drive but then it disconnects frequently until I unplug in frustration...Tried pretty much all of possible solutions mentioned in this forum and other....

I guess the next step is android...

Hmm, very strange...

I have tried genuine apple cable before with no luck. This time I’m was only using the Audi genuine cable, specified for this type of connection. I guess I can try one more time with apple one...

I have tried an iPhone 7 as well (but no CarPlay function only charging) with same result. Switching on and off charge randomly...

I have had a usb meter plugged in also, connected both separate and in between car and iPhone (some had this as a possible solution) but it didn’t work for me. However when I have it plugged in together with iphone and it begin to disconnect randomly, I unplug the phone, my car still keeps disconnecting the usb power meter/usb port randomly.

Could it be something wrong the USB ports in my car? Although they have these ports tested in my Audi workshop...with no errors...

BTW, Thanks for your support!

An interesting chain of events happened after I updated from 12.1.3 to 12.1.4.

My CarPlay connected in my KIA 2018 Stinger then disconnected then Connected then Disconnected and then Locked.

Had to reboot Iphone. My CarPlay connected then disconnected then stayed connected.

Before the update my Carplay was running perfect after 12.1.3.

What the **** happened iPhone support. Did you just decide to push the update from pressure or lack of ambition.

I guess the one thing that came out of it was SiriusXM did finally fully load the GUI on the CarPlay.

I'm not the only one getting frustrated.

Car Manufactures and Dealers are tired of hearing about problems as well.

I don't totally blame Apply Support. I also Blame the Car and Truck Manufacturers.

I had a n Android Phone one a long tme ago. They have unproved Tremendously. I do not want them to take over the Market place. I work at Lockheed Martin as a IT Sr. systems analyst and Integration specialist's Manager. I was involved in the migration to iPhone from Blackberry and Android.

Please this right.

Thank You.

Same problem. 2018 Audi A5 Sportback. Switched from an iPhone X running the iOS 12 public beta. No problems. Upgraded to an iPhone XS Max (256/AT&T/gold) running 12.0. Same problems as OP. Tried hard resets: did nothing to solve the problem. Did a full restore: nothing. Wiped the phone and started from scratch: nothing. Went to Genius Bar, reported the problem, got a replacement unit (same specs): nothing. Upgraded to 12.1 public beta 2 (the one that’s supposed to fix the charging problem, figuring it was related): nothing. Problem does not happen when plugging in my old X, my wife’s 7S Plus, or my daughter’s 8, all running 12.0.

There does seems to be some correlation between when the car’s Wi-Fi is doing something and when the CarPlay cuts out. Trying to figure out whether there’s a way to disable it (turning it off in the Audi settings doesn’t appear to be enough). Weirdly, if I put the phone into Airplane Mode, then connect it to the USB port, the problem doesn’t occur. (Of course, this is useless, since the phone is now offline.) But if I wait about five minutes and then switch it back to regular mode, the problem didn‘t return. Only tried this once, so I need more testing. Not sure what that would mean, other than to suggest a conflict betwen the iPhone’s Wi-Fi (or Bluetooth, or both) and the car’s.
