Alas. So much for the easy solution.
This list (https://www.macworld.co.uk/feature/mac-software/apps-work-macos-mojave-3678735/) might point you to some trouble spots among the big software contenders, but it's worth noting I have a pretty good spread of many of the apps listed there (CS5, Word 2011, etc), and none of them crash or burn, nor do they contribute to any slowdowns on my Air. The trouble I was having on my Mini appears to have been due entirely to a failing HD.
That is the next thing to check, by the way. Run Disk Utility on your drives and see if any of them report problems in the SMART status (bottom left of the table of info here):
If it says anything other than "Verified", you'll need to replace the drive soon.
In addition to that, run over your Mac with a fine-tooth comb. If there's any third-party stuff loading in your system menu, or anything loading under "Login Items" with your user account, make sure it's up to date. Also, older software that was not cleanly uninstalled might have left something behind that's interfering with your system now — though tracking that down might be extraordinarily difficult.
Some third-party apps require you to disable SIP (system integrity protection) to install and run. If you don't remember ever booting to recovery and entering this command in the Terminal:
csrutil disable
…then you probably don't have any such software on your machine. Nevertheless, try loading Terminal (you don't have to reboot to do this) and enter this command:
csrutil status
If you see anything other than "System Integrity Protection status: enabled.", you'll need to boot to recovery, select Terminal from the Utilities menu, and enter this command:
csrutil enable
…Followed by a reboot. You can only enable or disable SIP from recovery. You can't do it from safe boot or even via sudo.
Among other things, SIP keeps permissions on files and folders what they ought to be. If those permissions get munged, some programs (and possibly macOS itself) might have trouble functioning.
Do you have a third-party peripheral, such as a keyboard, mouse, printer, scanner, or some other hardware element? Confirm its drivers are up to date.
If you have Flash, make sure it's the most recent version. (Check it via the Flash Player item in System Preferences; if it's not there, you probably don't have Flash.) I got a system dialog today telling me the Flash updater daemon was 32-bit, not 64-bit, and so I needed to run an update (the default is for it to auto-update, but I turned that off years ago). Apps that have daemon programs like that, running in the background periodically, are likely suspects in quietly causing trouble in a largely-untraceable way.
Also, take a look at Font Book and see if there are any fonts listed that appear to be damaged or poorly coded. Problematic ones should show the yellow caution triangle next to them in the fonts list. Consider turning those off, or removing them, if there are any.
I've seen problems like software-extension incompatibility before, and it always results in unpredictable system performance somewhere. The trick always is finding out which program is the source of the problem. You've probably seen EtreCheck referenced in other posts in this forum. It might be worth running a report on your machine, seeing if there's anything noted in it, and removing the problematic software, if any.
Very thorough but I experienced the issue on a pure SSD configuration, not a fusion drive. I continue to believe that there’s a memory leak or lack of optimization in Spotlight indexing. I presume Apple is aware. I pray to the silicon gods that it will be addressed in 10.14.1 so I can re-enable Spotlight.
This has got to be the worst version of Mac OS X ever... I have an iMac (Retina 4K, 21.5-inch, Late 2015) 16 GB 1867 MHz DDR3, 500 GB Flash Storage. Every day my Mac freezes. I tried reinstalling, & restoring just my user profile from a backup. Still iTunes helper will crash, Finder will crash & change to Relaunch, Amazon Photos crashes, I don't understand was there any testing done at all for this release?? Mind you I've even tried the developer beta's & still those crash.. so it doesn't look like any fixes are coming in 10.14.1... COME ON APPLE.. YOUR A TRILLION DOLLAR COMPANY.. WE EXPECT BETTER 😐
Not surprisingly Apple *never* makes any announcements about bugs. Eventually they’ll release a .1 update with “bug fixes and optimizations”. We’ll all roll the dice, install it, and hope for the best.
I am really glad you are able to discern so much without any information to back it up. It has been my experience that the most of the time with an upgrade to macOS, there are things that can be done to solve problems rather then just waiting for Apple. While it does happen that Apple is able to fix some problems, it is more of an except rather then the rule hence the reason I requested an EtreCheck report to see if there might be some the user can do besides wait.
Turning off spotlight is a huge thing for me as I am constantly using it... I will have to switch to Alfred.
This is so annoying, I always wait until the first update of macos as every time they make it super unstable...
I am having these random freezing sessions every one to two hours.
Non of the suggestion work or apply to me. I have a complete fresh install, MBA 2015. No previous files, no unsupported apps, etc. The OS constantly freezes while i do anything, it seems random but mostly when I'm multitasking or in an app for a while. it was completely irresponsible for Apple to release Mojave in its current state. Last time I used the OS it froze 15 times within 4 hours. It's impossible to work or do anything worth while. Right now I'm on my ipad to post. Froze 4 times since 9am.
I am experiencing issues with finder.
I use the google drive in my finder window and whenever I search for something it just freezes. Had to shut down twice.
I have used that spotlight recommendation above to see if that helps. Will report back.
Hello peeps,
Providing a bit more details about my different issues with Mojave (related to the random freezing).
1. I can hear a lot more frequently the fan going on since I installed mojave. In fact, I got to almost identical macbook pro's (retina 15" mid 2015), one on mojave and one on high sierra (as my wife has not upgraded). She noticed the sound and told me "your mac wasn't this loud a week ago, what changed?"
2. I experience the lock-ups when the computer is under load and the fan has been on for a bit. Compiling a large project and skyping seem to do the trick all the time but it can be experience as well just opening a bunch of "number" documents.
3. A friend moved to mojave fresh installing everything and he does not seem to have the issue... yet I've seen in this forum it can happen as well on fresh installs.
4. I've deactivated spotlight, removed my harddrive from there and used alfred for more than a week. Still had the same issues.
5. Resetting SMC did nothing.
6. I've experience the same issue with just safari open web.benchmark.com (open two tabs)... nothing else was running as I forcefully killed everything just to test it was not associated with any other software conflict.
Extremely frustrating Apple has not manifested about this... yet they never do.
Same exact thing is happening to me and none of the recommended fixes on this thread address it. I've had to restart my computer because of freezes 6 times so far today.
Remember when Apple used to ship stable software instead of crap like this?
#thanksapple
Totally agree. Apples QA has went downhill.. they better not be thinking of switching processors because they can’t even make stable software on Intel. Imagine a new OS release on a totally new architecture.
I'm not really sure what you mean by download stuff to the share? This is my Storage NAS and I copy stuff over there from my Mac Pro in the hope that I'll be able to re-read them 😀😀😀
I don't know if it's an SMB2 or SMB3 share. How to tell?
On the other hand, why can I repeatedly cause this freeze if I try to mount the same NAS through AFP? That's weird too, isn't it?
Ok, so I updated to 10.14.1... the first thing I notice is that since the update, Spotlight is indexing like crazy... maybe they changed something in there and all the indexes are being rebuilt.
On the other hand, I read the release notes for the update and there's no word about any bugfix, just facetime group calls and new freakin' emojis.... so I'm a little confused there.
I'll let it do its stuff and get back to you all after 1-2 days when I see how it goes...
Cheers.
Erm... when they released the first intel systems were utter crap... rosetta used to run extremely slow on intel because they didn't want to put the full load on it (and lots of the programs at that time used to be designed for powerPC)...
If they are planning to do the migration, get ready.
And, I have not done the update and my macs have been indexing like crazy since I tried to start in safe mode as one of the suggestions published here. Maybe they did try to fix an indexation issue but my computer still have not finished with this process.
I would say that wouldn't be wise business practices.. I see the Intel architecture as an advantage that the Mac has now because it makes it so easy to run all of Windows applications through BootCamp or parallels or VMWare Fusion. Them switching to Arm or custom or whatever they want is just another annoyance with Apple like removing the headphone jack, & needing a dongle lol.
