Alas. So much for the easy solution.
This list (https://www.macworld.co.uk/feature/mac-software/apps-work-macos-mojave-3678735/) might point you to some trouble spots among the big software contenders, but it's worth noting I have a pretty good spread of many of the apps listed there (CS5, Word 2011, etc), and none of them crash or burn, nor do they contribute to any slowdowns on my Air. The trouble I was having on my Mini appears to have been due entirely to a failing HD.
That is the next thing to check, by the way. Run Disk Utility on your drives and see if any of them report problems in the SMART status (bottom left of the table of info here):
If it says anything other than "Verified", you'll need to replace the drive soon.
In addition to that, run over your Mac with a fine-tooth comb. If there's any third-party stuff loading in your system menu, or anything loading under "Login Items" with your user account, make sure it's up to date. Also, older software that was not cleanly uninstalled might have left something behind that's interfering with your system now — though tracking that down might be extraordinarily difficult.
Some third-party apps require you to disable SIP (system integrity protection) to install and run. If you don't remember ever booting to recovery and entering this command in the Terminal:
csrutil disable
…then you probably don't have any such software on your machine. Nevertheless, try loading Terminal (you don't have to reboot to do this) and enter this command:
csrutil status
If you see anything other than "System Integrity Protection status: enabled.", you'll need to boot to recovery, select Terminal from the Utilities menu, and enter this command:
csrutil enable
…Followed by a reboot. You can only enable or disable SIP from recovery. You can't do it from safe boot or even via sudo.
Among other things, SIP keeps permissions on files and folders what they ought to be. If those permissions get munged, some programs (and possibly macOS itself) might have trouble functioning.
Do you have a third-party peripheral, such as a keyboard, mouse, printer, scanner, or some other hardware element? Confirm its drivers are up to date.
If you have Flash, make sure it's the most recent version. (Check it via the Flash Player item in System Preferences; if it's not there, you probably don't have Flash.) I got a system dialog today telling me the Flash updater daemon was 32-bit, not 64-bit, and so I needed to run an update (the default is for it to auto-update, but I turned that off years ago). Apps that have daemon programs like that, running in the background periodically, are likely suspects in quietly causing trouble in a largely-untraceable way.
Also, take a look at Font Book and see if there are any fonts listed that appear to be damaged or poorly coded. Problematic ones should show the yellow caution triangle next to them in the fonts list. Consider turning those off, or removing them, if there are any.
I've seen problems like software-extension incompatibility before, and it always results in unpredictable system performance somewhere. The trick always is finding out which program is the source of the problem. You've probably seen EtreCheck referenced in other posts in this forum. It might be worth running a report on your machine, seeing if there's anything noted in it, and removing the problematic software, if any.
I am using a 2017 iMac 27inch and my problem is somewhat different. A few times a day, if I don't use my stylus and intuos pad, the cursor freezes in the upper left corner of the screen. Nothing I do, including waiting ten minutes, free the cursor. I have to use the key board to reboot, and all is fine. When the cursor is frozen, I do not get the twirling ball or any other part of the system freezing. I can use arrow keys to navigate and reply to dialogs, and the keyboard to switch apps.
I have tried the remedies below, but none have any effect. How annoying and disruptive!
Same here!!!!!!!
Freezes up, lagging, the ty entering speed is not matched with the speed i type, major lack of appearing on the search bar, even now as I type....
open system preference is like opening PhotoShop can you believe that?
I have done power reset, unplugged power and hold power for 5 seconds, also did option + command + RP.
NO LUCK!
Watch YouTube or any other online videos, it freezes up but audio is playing.
I did clear all caches, cookies, uninstalled some apps, cleaned use cleanmymac X, no luck whatsoever.
Please release new update to correct the error, Apple PLEASE.
Never experienced my Mac AS A PC, you hear me?! I think you do, so please correct Mac as a MAC.
holy ****, this has become even worst than windows, whenever some app is opening, everything else freezes... except the pointer... which cannot do anything apart from move around on a frozen screen.
like i have never seen this bad OS lag/hang since windows xp.... steve jobs would have never allowed an OS like this to come to his macs
OK, so it just happened again and this time I had enough patience to open console and see what was happening. These are the logs that appeared just after the freeze ended every few seconds:
After each log, the machine was responsive for about another 5 seconds before freezing for 5 seconds in a constant cycle that even continued as it was shutting down.
i had dragged my whole hard drive into dont look up per the original suggestion by ex-cop, (and it worked but too limiting) so i am going to try your fix now 🙂----- just one question. below the box with the options where you checked those 3 items is a box to check or uncheck that says "allow spotlight suggestions in lookup" what did you do with that? thanks!
FWIW may Mac app beachballing problem just started again. This is with 10.14.1.
Time machine was not running (previously I thought it might be a trigger).
Safari and Mail locked up at about the same time, followed by Messages and Calendar.
For me- Microsoft and Adobe apps still seem to be fine, as is Chrome which I am using to type this. I'm trying to gather as much information as I can before I reboot.
The only other thing I can find in Activity Monitor that is also locked up is:
com.apple.hiservices-xpcservice
EtreCheck reports no issues at all.
Update: I did the Spotlight thing (put all the drives into private, rebooted into safe mode, cleared the cache, deleted /.Vspotlight (sp) and rebooted.
Very next wake 4 hours later it froze cycled again :/
I’m having the same issue. Imac, late 2012. Updates are currant. 8g ram, 2tb ssd. I am a freelance designer and this keeps happening on a regular basis since the Mojave upgrade. Sometimes several times a day. I cannot tell you how much time and money this has cost me in lost work that could not be recovered.
Hi guys,
As recommended by so many here, I disabled spotlight indexing of my HDD but it didn't work. My Mac froze again just now. For me, this always happens while I'm online. So waiting for the fix to come by.
Second day of same exact issues Sunny813 has been experiencing and 6th reboot to no avail. :(
i am sad... only started happening after MOJAVE, which sounds great.
I cant even try the aforementioned techniques because either the keyboard and mouse don’t seem to be able to toggle or click to open anything. And when I think it might, it sits in the perpetual spinning beachball mode, for as kind as 40 minutes on one attempt.
After the two upgrades, problem indeeds persist on my iMac (see below). 2 other machines (more recent iMac and MBP) seem unaffected. This is just unacceptable. :-(

The videos don't play in Quicktime, in the finder, and the streaming don't work too (both audio only or video)
When I restart my computer , it works for a while and the problem is back after a moment...
But whyyyyyy ?
I mac 5K retina 27" 4,2 GHz Intel Core i7 16 Go /Ram Radeon Pro 580 8192 Mo
Its so irritating to see my MAC getting frozen 3 times a day atleast. Ever since this Mojave has come life this problem has arose. Most of my time is spent on the browser, the moment I feel my internet stopping and I click on the Wifi icon above, spinner keeps moving indefinitely and wifi tray doesn't open up either. Thereafter it doesn't let me shutdown, restart legitimately. Microsoft products hangup too after this.
I am not sure if this is all being caused by the MacOs or Microsoft products are causing this frozen situation. I am hopeful TimCook should also face this issue. Its embarrassing, if every Mac user would start to face this issue after every few hours, people would rather want to go with the Surface book.
Same here.
All GUI freezes for 20 seconds at a time. Music is still playing and mouse moves with no beachball.
Can easily be provoked, happnds one of ten times, by maximise a window or try to show Mission Control.
Wow ! My problem seems minor compared to yours. I can just avoid the apparently corrupted folder on "Macintosh HD", which has nothing I created in it anyway. I have no idea where it came from. It just appears at system start up. So, for now, I am going to be really boring, and pragmatic, and ignore it, and not select it, and maybe it will disappear in the next update of OS X? It is one of those problems I can walk around for now, so I am not going to waste any more time trying to analyse what it means. I suppose I could run the Terminal app and try to find this strange folder in the OS X directory system, and try to delete it, but I am not convinced it is worth the bother, or even a good idea, since it is probably better to let Apple, eventually, fix the problem, and work out the problem's root (sic) cause, hopefully by the next update of OS X.
