Alas. So much for the easy solution.

This list (https://www.macworld.co.uk/feature/mac-software/apps-work-macos-mojave-3678735/) might point you to some trouble spots among the big software contenders, but it's worth noting I have a pretty good spread of many of the apps listed there (CS5, Word 2011, etc), and none of them crash or burn, nor do they contribute to any slowdowns on my Air. The trouble I was having on my Mini appears to have been due entirely to a failing HD.

That is the next thing to check, by the way. Run Disk Utility on your drives and see if any of them report problems in the SMART status (bottom left of the table of info here):

User uploaded file

If it says anything other than "Verified", you'll need to replace the drive soon.

In addition to that, run over your Mac with a fine-tooth comb. If there's any third-party stuff loading in your system menu, or anything loading under "Login Items" with your user account, make sure it's up to date. Also, older software that was not cleanly uninstalled might have left something behind that's interfering with your system now — though tracking that down might be extraordinarily difficult.

Some third-party apps require you to disable SIP (system integrity protection) to install and run. If you don't remember ever booting to recovery and entering this command in the Terminal:

csrutil disable

…then you probably don't have any such software on your machine. Nevertheless, try loading Terminal (you don't have to reboot to do this) and enter this command:

csrutil status

If you see anything other than "System Integrity Protection status: enabled.", you'll need to boot to recovery, select Terminal from the Utilities menu, and enter this command:

csrutil enable

…Followed by a reboot. You can only enable or disable SIP from recovery. You can't do it from safe boot or even via sudo.

Among other things, SIP keeps permissions on files and folders what they ought to be. If those permissions get munged, some programs (and possibly macOS itself) might have trouble functioning.

Do you have a third-party peripheral, such as a keyboard, mouse, printer, scanner, or some other hardware element? Confirm its drivers are up to date.

If you have Flash, make sure it's the most recent version. (Check it via the Flash Player item in System Preferences; if it's not there, you probably don't have Flash.) I got a system dialog today telling me the Flash updater daemon was 32-bit, not 64-bit, and so I needed to run an update (the default is for it to auto-update, but I turned that off years ago). Apps that have daemon programs like that, running in the background periodically, are likely suspects in quietly causing trouble in a largely-untraceable way.

Also, take a look at Font Book and see if there are any fonts listed that appear to be damaged or poorly coded. Problematic ones should show the yellow caution triangle next to them in the fonts list. Consider turning those off, or removing them, if there are any.

I've seen problems like software-extension incompatibility before, and it always results in unpredictable system performance somewhere. The trick always is finding out which program is the source of the problem. You've probably seen EtreCheck referenced in other posts in this forum. It might be worth running a report on your machine, seeing if there's anything noted in it, and removing the problematic software, if any.

not sure whether you have access to windows machines, but i'm sure there's some pro photo and video tools you can get that will let you at least continue your work while you wait for apple to fix this issue. you don't even need to buy pro software there are several free very capable video editing tools for the windows platform you can use.

i have found that having bootcamp and windows 10 installed on my machine has been a life saver when macOS reminds me of the windows 95 days ....

you will not see a remedy .... i guarantee it.

since been on the beta and completely removed adobe flash from macOS as a precaution, whether drives are included/excluded from spotlight .... you're bound to have an issue. i have gone down the same path as you (full genius bar hardware test, full system wipe and reimage by genius bar, reset rams/controllers, etc.)

today i left my machine logged in/on then returning to it after a while (i have no idea how a mac behaves after the screen is closed or the display turns off) .... i come back to it and the screen will not wake. i saw the backlighting turn on, but screen was black, unresponsive. no combination of keys or touching the trackpad could get the os to come back.

lately i've been interested in buying a new MacBook pro ..... but the last few years seems like apple doesn't care much about the macOS experience as a solid and capable computing device for computer users. even the connect to server feature is second rate and my NAS files/folders take 4x as long to load in finder every time i open them when compared to Windows 10.

good for them that they captured the very small crowd that doesn't mind dongle heaven and a touch bar.

Sorry meant to comment on your observations regarding NAS server loading (although off-topic so apologies for that). I have a MyCloud server for remote access, as well as a variety of connected Hard & Cloud storage & backup options. Wherever possible I use Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) to transfer files and I find it much faster and more reliable. If I need continuous synchronisation (example - it's messy to synchronise Desktop smart folder with MS OneDrive) I use Sync Folders Pro to maintain a live synchronised Desktop subfolder in my OneDrive Folder. I believe CCC are looking at offering continuous sync option.

what you described is the exact same issue i have.

very difficult to figure out since i too pull up activity monitor, waiting for the problem to happen again. unfortunately circumstances dont work in my favor at times i dont have activity monitor running.

to make it worse, the system will not generate a crash report, and i cant see any indicators in the system log that hint towards a problem.

My MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2015) freezes AT LEAST once a day since upgrading to Mojave 10.14.2 (18C54).

What's going on? It happens when I'm in the middle of a lecture using ppt and word, or just browsing chrome/ watching netflix.

The spinning wheel shows up when I try to quit the apps or click the WIFI logo and every time it happens the only option is to restart it.

It drives me crazy, I loved my mac, but now I'm so frustrated...

Any solution?

i’ve tried having activity monitor running and looking at diagnostic and log entries .... cannot spot anything abnormal. windowserver wasnt using much resources either.

last night i woke up my computer (no apps/programs running), then started outlook .... it kept bouncing then got the beachball. could move mouse but not do anything .....

at this rate, with no acknowedgment from apple, nothing mentioned in tech news outlets about this issue, looks like we shouldnt expect a resolution any time soon.

not even a moderator has come in here to make a comment in this discussion.

or you can turn on icloud for all the items you want to transfer over ... that might be faster.

another option you have (it’s paid software) ... is Chronosync.

i use it daily to run mirror copies of all the folders where i have data i want to keep .... to an external drive or NAS.

when you roll back your OS and reinstall all your apps, you can put your data back in those folders and you’re good to go.

getting quite fed up with this multiple times per day having to restart my system. many times an app may be open and worried about risking data corruption ....

apple hasn't fixed this issue yet and guessing on the amount of pages of this discussion and that some depend on their macs to do work .... it's very disappointing to see apple doing nothing because the company is reeling from it's negative publicity with it's stocks and poor iphone performance .....

leaving the customer last, and the $$$ first .... that's the apple way !
