Alas. So much for the easy solution.
This list (https://www.macworld.co.uk/feature/mac-software/apps-work-macos-mojave-3678735/) might point you to some trouble spots among the big software contenders, but it's worth noting I have a pretty good spread of many of the apps listed there (CS5, Word 2011, etc), and none of them crash or burn, nor do they contribute to any slowdowns on my Air. The trouble I was having on my Mini appears to have been due entirely to a failing HD.
That is the next thing to check, by the way. Run Disk Utility on your drives and see if any of them report problems in the SMART status (bottom left of the table of info here):
If it says anything other than "Verified", you'll need to replace the drive soon.
In addition to that, run over your Mac with a fine-tooth comb. If there's any third-party stuff loading in your system menu, or anything loading under "Login Items" with your user account, make sure it's up to date. Also, older software that was not cleanly uninstalled might have left something behind that's interfering with your system now — though tracking that down might be extraordinarily difficult.
Some third-party apps require you to disable SIP (system integrity protection) to install and run. If you don't remember ever booting to recovery and entering this command in the Terminal:
csrutil disable
…then you probably don't have any such software on your machine. Nevertheless, try loading Terminal (you don't have to reboot to do this) and enter this command:
csrutil status
If you see anything other than "System Integrity Protection status: enabled.", you'll need to boot to recovery, select Terminal from the Utilities menu, and enter this command:
csrutil enable
…Followed by a reboot. You can only enable or disable SIP from recovery. You can't do it from safe boot or even via sudo.
Among other things, SIP keeps permissions on files and folders what they ought to be. If those permissions get munged, some programs (and possibly macOS itself) might have trouble functioning.
Do you have a third-party peripheral, such as a keyboard, mouse, printer, scanner, or some other hardware element? Confirm its drivers are up to date.
If you have Flash, make sure it's the most recent version. (Check it via the Flash Player item in System Preferences; if it's not there, you probably don't have Flash.) I got a system dialog today telling me the Flash updater daemon was 32-bit, not 64-bit, and so I needed to run an update (the default is for it to auto-update, but I turned that off years ago). Apps that have daemon programs like that, running in the background periodically, are likely suspects in quietly causing trouble in a largely-untraceable way.
Also, take a look at Font Book and see if there are any fonts listed that appear to be damaged or poorly coded. Problematic ones should show the yellow caution triangle next to them in the fonts list. Consider turning those off, or removing them, if there are any.
I've seen problems like software-extension incompatibility before, and it always results in unpredictable system performance somewhere. The trick always is finding out which program is the source of the problem. You've probably seen EtreCheck referenced in other posts in this forum. It might be worth running a report on your machine, seeing if there's anything noted in it, and removing the problematic software, if any.
Similar problem. Mojave creates corrupted folder on "Mac Hard Drive" , called "untitled 2", after start up. if I select the folder to delete it the system freezes, beach ball spins, etc. The only escape is shut down the system. The other folders in that directory are fine, opening to show their contents, no problems. It is just this single corrupted folder that I must not select or the system freezes. I guess I can just avoid selecting that corrupted folder until a bug fix arrives, eventually, :-) Beware of random folders arriving called "untitled 2", or something like that
No other problems with Mojave freezing so far.
I guess I should have waited until Mojave was an update on the AppStore before installing it, as I usually do. "Never install the first version of software" :-)
Good luck !
for me that did not work. to the point where i completely wiped all partitions from my ssd and started from scratch - still got freezing and beach balling randomly without any 3rd party apps installed.
been happening on my late 2013 mbp since high sierra.
trying to root out the source is kind of difficult, because no one has responded to previous posts of mine in other topics where i'd like to find the log file that will tell me what my computer was hung up doing at the moment i decided to hard reboot. when i experience this issue, i note the time (i have seconds shown in the top bar), so i can backtrack to the log entries that are written just before shutdown as well as after reboot.
seems like macOS isn't as dependable and solid as it used to be and that's echoing memories of the win-95 days .... which doesn't provide much relief ....
not the person you replied to .... but i can vouch for trying those steps (see my previous post), they dont work.
what we have is some buggy software from apple, driving issues for ppl .... ive seen posters with both old and new mbp models who have this issue.
last night i experienced this again - even after installing the public beta.
cannot even get to the force quit kb shortcut. nor can i get a useful crash report out of the computer because it wont generate one.
I'm already on the public beta .... 10.14.3 and it's happening from time to time.
i decided to completely uninstall adobe flash yesterday and see if that makes any difference.
still don't have some sense of understanding what this issue is where it's coming from and so no sense of closure that it's going to be fixed in the future.
Since upgrading to Mojave and this started I've had an Apple tech on my machine, and gone though the various reboots, resets, repair disk permissions etc. Apart from anything else they should be embarrassed about the fact that when they ask me to grant permission to take over control the mac freezes for several minutes. No joy. I did follow advice of several posters who suggested dragging hard drives (I have several connected) across to the "don't use Spotlight" box; this was a slight improvement in that the Mac didn't actually freeze (even the on-screen clock used to stop) but it still took a minute or two before the permission actually "took". Main problem it caises me is that I have some apps that request access permission (for example Sony Walkman interface) and the app times out before permission is granted. I'm running Mojave10.14.2 - I have seen a couple of posts suggesting that the Beta of 10.14.3 solves the problem but not sure when full release is due?
Kernel panics are a constant and common issue under Mojave. I have been experiencing them constantly after upgrading. I have searched throughly on these forums only to find many people are having the same problems. It is not a hardware issue. I perform publicly with my mac at least 3 times a week, and until this is fixed, I can't trust it anymore. I am eagerly waiting for Apple to roll out the next iteration of the OS and see if they fix this critical stability disaster.
And a quick update - I had 2 McAfee "gurus" on my iMac this afternoon for 3 hours solid. They ran a whole suite of diagnostics and have taken logs under a range of different conditions. They spent some time looking at the CPU overhead with WindowServer (which is very resource-hungry as it basically manages the relationship between apps and the graphics card. However we set up a "clean" admin account with no apps running and no external connections, and the problem didn't go away. They also trawled through the OS to identify files associated with permissions and listed them as exclusions in McAfee Real-time Virus Scan. Again sadly no joy.
So they've taken the logs and are going to compare with those from other users to see if they can spot any anomalies. I have to say these guys were very knowledgable and professional, and they seem to be really committed to sorting it out if they can.
just an update from my side:
high sierra has not proven any better .... confirming that i had similar issues before i first upgraded to mojave.
just asking ppl here to do the following:
when the crash occurs, let the computer reboot itself (wait it out), when it does and youre prompted to submit a report to apple - just include the url of this discussion in your comments.
unfortunately, if the issue is indeed a missing key in the nvram, I dont think etrecheck will detect it. nor will any other pro tool like techtool 10.
if the problem is due to a missing item in the nvram, by virtue of coding error, then also performing the suggested ‘reset’ method will restore the nvram with the flaw present.
as i suggested here (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8565872?answerId=250189302022#250189302022), i would like to hear back from ppl if they have applied it to thier machines ?
i also had tried everything under the sun and the spotlight suggestion but seems it did not fix. i recently did the nvram fix and testing that out.
yesterday apple released a mojave 10.14.3 update but am hessitant to apply it yet, it may introduce the same issue, another missing key or an entirely different issue alltogether.
will wait it out and see
Another thought: Seeing how at least in my case the Kernel Panics were not present at all before upgrading to Mojave, and that the crash logs point to a GPU panic, I wonder if we should be considering incompatibilities between certain hardware drivers and Mojave to be at fault.
All right. I'm now practically convinced that the problem is APFS not working properly on fusion drives. Congrats to Apple for forcing its users to a file system that doesn't work. Does anyone know if the App Store still refuses to perform upgrades when Mojave is installed on an HFS+ drive? If so, please Apple, it's critical that you relax that limitation, as an emergency measure for people like me, suffering from the freeze problem.
i have my doubts about hardware test accuracy, whether you do it with the built-in tool, or take it to an apple store for the 'thorough' test.
many ppl are trying so many different things and the problem does not go away. lends itself to the notion that this is an apple software issue.
DJDL7,
my late 2013 mbp does NOT have discrete graphics, yet I am here in this discussion, with this problem.
I spoke with tech from Alsoft, and yes they are aware of the problems. He indicated that an update to DiskWarrior would not be available for 3 to 4 months. Unlike many above responses, my freezes generated an automatic restart. The last two times I did a hard restart. I am sure that there is more involved than simply the file system, so am waiting for Alsoft's update. Since my last 2 freezes involved Photo's, there may indeed be a graphics problem. Did note that Adobe Elements 2018 I am running is basically, 32 bit. Have not updated.
for 3 days been running fine while completely signed out of iCloud on the map .....
just a moment ago i was moving and renaming video files on my NAS (smb share), out of nowhere, the screen went black, then i got presented with the restart screen (some stuff written in english and different languages, something went wrong, computer had to restart) ....
when this happened, i had no 3rd party or apple apps running. just finder.
after reboot, was prompted to submit a report to apple so i did that.
carrying on in finder, noticed the bar up top disappeared and desktop drives disappeared. dock was still there, was able to do a finder relaunch and things came back.
this instance was different from the typical spinning beachball of death with no recourse. strange.
since last time ... i've installed mojave and on this latest update with apfs .... the freezing has only occurred once or twice in the past month, which is good.
hopefully the issue has been largely addressed by the latest 10.14.5 ....
