Alas. So much for the easy solution.

This list (https://www.macworld.co.uk/feature/mac-software/apps-work-macos-mojave-3678735/) might point you to some trouble spots among the big software contenders, but it's worth noting I have a pretty good spread of many of the apps listed there (CS5, Word 2011, etc), and none of them crash or burn, nor do they contribute to any slowdowns on my Air. The trouble I was having on my Mini appears to have been due entirely to a failing HD.

That is the next thing to check, by the way. Run Disk Utility on your drives and see if any of them report problems in the SMART status (bottom left of the table of info here):

User uploaded file

If it says anything other than "Verified", you'll need to replace the drive soon.

In addition to that, run over your Mac with a fine-tooth comb. If there's any third-party stuff loading in your system menu, or anything loading under "Login Items" with your user account, make sure it's up to date. Also, older software that was not cleanly uninstalled might have left something behind that's interfering with your system now — though tracking that down might be extraordinarily difficult.

Some third-party apps require you to disable SIP (system integrity protection) to install and run. If you don't remember ever booting to recovery and entering this command in the Terminal:

csrutil disable

…then you probably don't have any such software on your machine. Nevertheless, try loading Terminal (you don't have to reboot to do this) and enter this command:

csrutil status

If you see anything other than "System Integrity Protection status: enabled.", you'll need to boot to recovery, select Terminal from the Utilities menu, and enter this command:

csrutil enable

…Followed by a reboot. You can only enable or disable SIP from recovery. You can't do it from safe boot or even via sudo.

Among other things, SIP keeps permissions on files and folders what they ought to be. If those permissions get munged, some programs (and possibly macOS itself) might have trouble functioning.

Do you have a third-party peripheral, such as a keyboard, mouse, printer, scanner, or some other hardware element? Confirm its drivers are up to date.

If you have Flash, make sure it's the most recent version. (Check it via the Flash Player item in System Preferences; if it's not there, you probably don't have Flash.) I got a system dialog today telling me the Flash updater daemon was 32-bit, not 64-bit, and so I needed to run an update (the default is for it to auto-update, but I turned that off years ago). Apps that have daemon programs like that, running in the background periodically, are likely suspects in quietly causing trouble in a largely-untraceable way.

Also, take a look at Font Book and see if there are any fonts listed that appear to be damaged or poorly coded. Problematic ones should show the yellow caution triangle next to them in the fonts list. Consider turning those off, or removing them, if there are any.

I've seen problems like software-extension incompatibility before, and it always results in unpredictable system performance somewhere. The trick always is finding out which program is the source of the problem. You've probably seen EtreCheck referenced in other posts in this forum. It might be worth running a report on your machine, seeing if there's anything noted in it, and removing the problematic software, if any.

Same for me. It has taken me 10 minutes to reply to this thread because I get the spinning color wheel. I turned off Spotlight - no immediate improvement. Mine is a mid 2012 Macbook Air. 4.6 GB memory free out of 8 GB. Nothing else running. Makes no sense to me. When I do try to run Excel or other Apps, they freeze for about 60 seconds periodically before resuming. Not sure why I was in a hurry to upgrade to Mojave. High Sierra was just fine.

My 2017 rMBP 15" has been a nightmare since the upgrade. I've wanted to throw it out the windows more than once.

I'm having to restart the system by long-pressing the power button nearly once per hour which makes using my computer for work extremely unproductive. My iMac has its own issues with hanging, but not nearly as bad as the MacBook Pro. I will try the suggestion to disable spotlight, but in the meantime, I'm trying to make sure I have a complete backup so I can downgrade.

Apple really needs to get it together on Desktop OS updates.

Has someone updated to 10.14.1 and noticed any improvement to this issue?

Haven't done it yet..

A possible solution, well that is not a solution to the problem but would allow using the coputer, is to roll back to Sierra... I'm thinking on having a second MacOs instal on my mac until this issue is solved... It's impossible to use an unstable computer.

I have also noticed that my mac freazes basicaly while using videos inside powerpoint. No other situations..

Perhaps this problem has nothing to do with Mohave and like I read above, it's tirdy part software causing the issue.

U use powerpoint 16.16, which is not the latest version (16.18).

I'll update it to see if this problem is resolved and let you guys know.

That's strange because I have no issues with SMB shares, but I do have some issues with Chrome, but they have been going on for awhile. In the future if you're unable to unmount the shares for some reason just disconnect from the network, temporarily turn-off WiFi or disconnect Ethernet. Is it an SMB2 or SMB3 share?

I think everyone here understands the issues seem to be filesystem related and likely because of the new system protections. What software were you using to download stuff to the share?

I have found a standard behavior for this issue. The freezing seems to be caused by certain websites in Safari. For instance, if I play a wav audio file in the dropbox embeed player the computer freezes and I can´t do anything else. Mouse moves, but system is unresponsive. The only thing that solves it is to do a hard power-off holding the power button (Mac Pro 2011 here). Anyone found a similar pattern to the freezing? Is there a way to solve it?

i thought i was alone and posted a question about this but got no activity there ....

random beach balling, unusable machine - force restarting .... unpredictable when it was happening. not very becoming of macOS.

i went to great lengths to fix this .... reinstalling macOS from recovery, breaking down and erasing the drive to redo my entire macOS/windows boot setup, even took it to a apple store to do the deep hardware test and have them install a fresh copy of mojave again. tried etrecheck too, crickets there (nothing to report).

ultimately, machine was random freezing without really anything installed. to this day, it is happening (not very frequently) and it's irritating.

i've seen the issue happen when i'm in safari, outlook, finder, etc.

i honestly do not know what is causing it for certain because i've not been able to get some help to successfully interpret my logs in console (i keep an eye on the timestamp when i hard reboot, so i can search the logs to see what happens around that time before reboot).

kind of disappointing .... and to compound onto this problem - mojave drains my mid-aged battery faster than previous releases.

i am actually having a better user experience on my microsoft surface book ..... wow.

So glad to have found out I’m not alone with this...although I definitely don’t want anyone to experience this extremely crippling issue.

I use the adobe suite on a daily basis and actually thought these programs (photoshop, Lightroom and Premiere pro) were the ones causing the problems, and I especially experienced the freezing when having two adobe programs opend at the same time. But the problem also showed it self when using the mail or notes apps, so that eventually let me here.

Trying to update to the latest software OS software now, and hoping for the best, because as of right now my iMac is useless and my I’m literally not able to do my work as a graphic designer :(

Mine is a 2014 MBP. At least once a day it freezes for about five minutes, then comes fully back to life. The freeze, as others have described, seems to go from one app to another, then everything is stuck with the beachball.

The apps I have open the most often are Mail and Safari. I'll try turning off Spotlight, but unfortunately that eliminates searching in Mail.

be careful apple might say your ranting but I agree it's very unacceptable i'm running an iMac (Retina 4K, 21.5-inch, Late 2015) with 3.1 GHz Intel Core i5 16 GB 1867 MHz DDR3 Intel Iris Pro Graphics 6200 1536 MB, APPLE SSD SM0512G, & the machine runs like crap since Mojave... Spinning wheels every second... always have to hold the power button... I even downgraded to High Sierra & the machine acted stable again... its the Operating System. It needs fixing. This post will probably get removed...
