Gmail stopped working on Ipad 3

My personal Gmail account stopped working on my Ipad 3G (iOS 9.3.5) when I changed my password (via my desktop) after a Google security alert informed me about an unauthorized attempt to log into my account. The next time I attempted to access my mail on my Ipad, I was prompted to enter my new password. Every time I open the Ipad mail app, I am continually prompted to reenter my password; but my personal Gmail messages never load. I can access my personal Gmail via the Safari browser, but not with Ipad mail app. I deleted all of my email accounts (except Icloud) from the Ipad mail app and tried to add the personal Gmail account first as recommended at Re: ipad not setting up gmail account. This approach was not successful. I also unsuccessfully attempted to add my personal Gmail as an Exchange account and as an Other account. One of the other email accounts I deleted was my educational (.edu) Gmail account. I am also unable to add that account back to my Ipad. I am able to access both Gmail accounts via my desktop, my Android phone, and my Ipad browser, but I cannot add either Gmail account to the mail app on my Ipad. Is this issue related to the security alert I received last week? Or is iOS 9.3.5 no longer compatible with Gmail?

I kept digging into the first article you recommended and resolved this issue. A link in the article led me to two successive websites:

Google may prevent your iPhone, iPad, or MacOS device from accessing your account if it's the first time we've seen this device sign in to your account, or if it's attempting to sign in from a new location.

Your Apple device may give you an "Incorrect username or password" error even though your password is correct.

To grant access to your Apple device, go to your web browser and follow the instructions to allow a new application to access your account.

Allow access to your Google account

I had the same situation - changed my gmail password and iPad3 with last IOS update 9.3.5 kept requesting gmail password. Entered it correctly, but the control panel showed that an error occurred. Deleted the gmail account and tried to add it - that failed too!

Started checking on Google - under account myaccount.google.com, check your "Manage your account access and security settings". The last setting is "Allow less secure apps" - it includes less secure devices... like my iPad 3. If it is OFF, then less secure devices will not be allowed to connect. I turned it ON, added the google mail. It solved my problem. After my email downloaded and I was able to receive and send, I turned the setting back to OFF. This seems to only be an issue after a password reset.

I am still getting GMail through the iOS Mail app on my iPad 2.

Have not had any new issues since posting that reply in the other posting you linked.

Before setting a GMail account in the iOS Mail App, have you tried a hard reset of your iPad by holding down both the Home and sleep/wake buttons simultaneously until your iPad goes to black and restarts with Apple logo, then release the buttons?

I read both articles. I saw this note: "Note: If you have iOS 8.3 or higher on your device, you will no longer have to use App passwords to use 2-Step Verification." Nevertheless, I attempted to generate an app password; but the following message appeared: "The setting you are looking for is not available for your account." Every time I received a Google security alert yesterday and today, I responded to the prompts to confirm and verify that it was me attempting to log into my Google account via my Ipad 3. This prompting option does not require a verification code. If there was something more specific in the articles that you think might be helpful, please let me know.

Both of my Gmail accounts (.com & .edu) were working fine. For the .com account, the issue arose last week when I attempted to update my password in the mail app. For the .edu account, the issue arose last night when I deleted it and attempted to add it back. I wonder if Google recently stopped supporting iOS 9.3.5, and the iOS compatibility issue only arises when you attempt to update your Gmail account.
