When connecting iPhoneX to iTunes I'm getting failed installation

When I try to connect iPhoneX (iOS12) to iTunes (Mojave) via USB, I get a "software update is required to connect to your phone" message:

but it always goes to "installation failed." This has happened since the day before iOS12 came out.
