When connecting iPhoneX to iTunes I'm getting failed installation

When I try to connect iPhoneX (iOS12) to iTunes (Mojave) via USB, I get a "software update is required to connect to your phone" message:

but it always goes to "installation failed." This has happened since the day before iOS12 came out.

iMac, macOS Mojave (10.14)

Just did a hard restart on iPhone, iPad Pro and iMac, power cycled the modem and router and get this error path on both iOS devices.
