iPhone XS Max video stuttering

I was having the same issue and then I turned off True Tone in the display settings and it corrected the issue for me. Might be worth trying for you and everyone else having this issue as well. Hopefully Apple fixes this in a future update.

Disabling auto brightness fixes these issues.

Also apple please fix this, it definitely looks like a software problem now.

I found a fix. Turn off auto brightness from settings. I don’t know what sort of weird connection it has with this issue but it seems to be working.

I have the same issue on a brand new iPhone X and was able to replicate it on a new XS phone at an Apple store. XR works fine.

By the way, there was no problem using 60fps non-HDR content from YouTube. This stuttering only occurres with “average” content.

I have contacted them and, if I am not the only one to call them on this issue, I am certainly one of very few to do so. Their internal forums have no mention of this problem. I have gone through a few channels now, have done their "last resort" fix which should have fixed the problem, but it has not. It is going to their engineers now.

The Apple agents I have talked to have been amazing to work with so far, so do not be afraid.

having this same issue as well. iphone xs max. video in my camera roll seems to playback fine but anything in safari, youtube, instagram, facebook, vlc, dropbox, etc all have studdering / choppy / dropped frame issues. i don’t know how else to describe it. looks like apple needs to push out a software update for us.

Had the Xs Max, but returned it for a refund and went back to the 7plus. The video frame rate problem was intolerable. NetFlix, Amazon video, Itunes video all dropping frames and various times. Apple and Verizon claiming there is no known issue with video playback. Unbelievable.

The whole UI stutters, definitely the low performance cores need optimizing. Also, games aren’t fluid when looking around in FPS.

Apparently this is affecting a small number of people.

If you aren’t happy with the phone, return it.

I really hope they fix it, this is so annoying. I bet that the low-performace core isn't working properly.

just watched Netflix and thought i was going crazy. Some seconds it runs fine and smooth, but then for the most time it stutters and lags. if this isnt fixed soon i eant my money back. I think it is the same issue like about scrolling that stutters after a about 10 seconds of not touching the screen.

I suggest we must raise this issue to apple customer support by also linking this discussion to them.

May be then apple will take the necessary action of rolling out some update containing a fix for this issue.

I am pretty hopeful that this problem can be solved by a software fix.

I’m experiencing the same issue. There’s a serious drop in frame rate but only when the device is left idle for more than 10 seconds. Seems to be more persistent while streaming online. There is also a lag in app animation, but again, only when you leave your phone idle for 10 secs or more.
