Why doesn't my keyboard shortcut for Finder "File" > "Tags..." function in Mojave?

Hi,

I have upgraded to 10.14, and now my Finder keyboard shortcut for the "Tags..." menu item doesn't work. I've tried deleting it, then re-adding it, in System Preferences, but that didn't solve the problem. I did that again, followed by a Finder restart, and that didn't work. I have tried changing the shortcut combo to a couple of other options, and that didn't work. I've also seen that a couple of other Mojave users have complained about this online.

This change has impacted my workflow negatively. Has anyone else noticed this? Have you fixed it? Has Apple said anything about it anywhere that you've read or heard?

Thank you!

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017), macOS Mojave (10.14)

In Safari settings, remove all the favorites in tags. Then go to a file and manually click Tags... from the menu bar, type in a tag and press enter. Next time the shortcut works, on all other files too.

You did find the solution but you described it incorrectly. You have to go into the Finder settings, not Safari, and drag the tags out of the Favorites field.

Apple uses an ellipsis following the Tags… menu item. If you did not type option+; (US Keyboard) following the word Tags in App Shortcuts : Menu Title, then any keyboard shortcut that you assigned would not work because the exact menu title string was not found. If you did include an ellipsis, and the keyboard shortcut remains ignored, then either it is already used, or there is another reason for its not working. You can always right-click on an icon to access Tags….

The past is not prologue, and continuing to not tell us what specific keyboard shortcut that you used just perpetuates the mystery. We need details to advance a solution recommendation.

Mojave has a revised Finder from anything previous, and just tossing a keyboard shortcut at a menu item can be frustrating — especially if that shortcut is already used by the operating system, or its recognition for a menu item is rejected by the Finder event manager. Previous macOS settings are no functionality guarantee in a new operating system.

What I have done is install macOS Mojave. That's all I have changed on my end. The shortcut worked through several iterations of the OS, and now it just doesn't, and my attempts to fix the matter (detailed above). I am not the only macOS Mojave user who has noted this issue (ref.: https://www.reddit.com/r/MacOS/comments/9irn9t/do_you_have_a_problem_with_mojave _please_send/).

Please, provide specific questions you'd like me to answer if you require more details to help. Thank you.

I now know what you mean, since another user has specified what some additional useful information is in the matter. You could have asked me for the specific information that you needed, but you criticized without asking clarifying questions. The next time something is 'left to be desired', specify what that is and advance the issue more rapidly.

I've contacted Apple. This issue has been escalated to their engineer department.

I didn't know that I was "continuing to not tell" what specific keyboard shortcuts I used. The original responder didn't specify what additional information I should provide; they criticized without clarifying/specifying.

You having stated what specific additional information would be useful in this case has helped, and I appreciate that. You have done so in a slightly condescending and presumptive manner, which I do not appreciate. You have 34,042 points; I had 4 (up to a whopping 8 at the time of this response). Please lead better by clarifying matters without talking down to new users. Thank you! 🙂

I did the best I could. You're the one who left me guessing what I had omitted. I didn't know to share the specific key combinations in the first place, but gladly would have provided them had you simply asked for them. Instead, you left me guessing as to what I had omitted. A discussion often evolves from a generic opening post and then becomes more specific through clarification and should be done so politely.

You are more experienced than I am. You could have led by criticizing then clarifying/specifying. If you're not going to lead by example and ask specific clarifying questions, then please, give other more patient forum users an opportunity to respond to new users; or lead by providing constructive feedback to new users. Passive aggressively responding to new, inexperienced forum members isn't good for this forum or the Apple user community.
