usb-c to hdmi not working

I have a HF4F2VC/A hub with the usbc port, hdmi and standard usb port to single usbc adapter.

I want to have my hdmi monitor as my second display, but I am not having any luck getting the laptop to recognize anything has occured, other than the power is charging.

I know the hdmi monitor works, because my windows desktop works flawlessly with it.

I have tried:

1) updates via the store

2) reseating the adapter

3) reseating the hdmi cable into the adapter

4) sleeping and waking the laptop

Its like the hdmi port in the adapter is not working, because the the monitor is just swapping between all inputs, and it passes the hdmi like its not even plugged in.
