iTunes not detecting iPhone on same wifi network

This isn't a question, I just want to share a solution to a problem I just solved and hope it helps someone. 🙂

After following the steps at the link below to sync my iPhone over wifi, iTunes still wasn't detecting my phone:

Sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod using iTunes on your computer

The problem was that my home wifi was set up as a Public Network instead of a Private Network.

On a public network different devices connected to the same network can't "see" each other. For security/privacy reason this makes sense for public wifi like that you might find at an airport, but not for your wifi at home where, for example, you might want to link a printer to your computer using wifi so that you can print wirelessly.

Fortunately it's pretty easy to fix, just go to Control Panel > Network and Sharing Centre > View network computers and devices. You'll then be told that network sharing is turned off and given a prompt to turn it on.

Some routers also employ client isolation features which can prevent devices on your network from seeing each other. Third party firewalls can also have an impact.
