Everything works in Apple CarPlay except navigation apps

I recently bought a new car (Mercedes Benz CLA 180) and tried using Apple CarPlay in it. Everything else works except navigation apps. When I use either Google maps or Apple maps, the current location gets constantly switched between the actual current location and somewhere in the middle of the sea near Thailand every now and then. Even apps like Find iPhone also shows the same incorrect location when maps are showing the wrong location. All apps works fine when not using CarPlay.

I tested with two iPhone X devices (mine and my wife's) with iOS 12 and I see the same issue on both.

Tested with an iPhone 6s running iOS 11 and still the GPS issue is there.

Tested with Google Maps on Android Auto on my brothers phone and it works correctly!

Has anyone ever seen anything similar?

Excellent news for BMW owners! In my country the ability of updating the system over the air is not enabled. My car was delivered with an old iDrive 7 version; I took it to the dealer, they updated iDive to the latest one and now it works flawlessly!

Old problem: In waze and google maps the app constantly thought I turned left or right at every intersection, even u turns; this caused the GSP to think I was going in the wrong direction and the route kept being recalculated.

Unfortunately iDrive is pretty restricted in my country so it won't tell me the system version; I don't know the previous version or the new version either.

So if you are un the US or Europe and GPS is crazy in your iDrive 7 it might be a different issue; if you are in a country where iDrive does not auto-update itself then you are in luck, just take the car to the dealer and ask them to update the software.

Best!

Hi, everyone. I just started experiencing similar issues. I have an iPhone Xs Max, running iOS 12.4. I drive a 2018 Genesis G80. I have never had any issues using CarPlay. NEVER.

At least, unti last week. Coincidentally, last week I updated my car's navigation software (from MapNSoft) to the latest version, which was 13.5 for Hyundai/Genesis vehicles. Updating the software not only updates the maps for the in-dash navi, but it also updates the entire infotainment system, including Apple CarPlay functions. Ever since that update, Apple CarPlay has trouble tracking my vehicle. If I'm navigating somewhere with directions, it works pretty well, except when I drive into a tunnel, or through a long underpass. Then it loses me until I come out the other side. But if I drive without a specific destination programmed, the maps don't seem to know where I am.

To test this, I went into my friend's Hyundai, which uses an older infotainment build. I plugged my phone in, and it worked PERFECTLY. Then we went to my car, and had issues again. We even plugged my friend's iPhone into my car, and he had the same issues. So it's definitely not our phones. Considering that this all began after updating my car's head unit, it has to be the car. Although oddly, the issues are sporadic. Sometimes it's perfect. Sometimes it's hit or miss. Sometimes it's horrible.

Note: Outside of my CarPlay navigational issues, my car's in-dash navi works perfectly. So I don't believe it's my car's GPS antenna or anything of the sort.

I had a similar problem in my car, Waze was unable to track my position in Apple carplay but the car's in dash navigation tracked it perfectly.

In my case the software update fixed the issue 100%. After the update, the car's in dash navigation continued to work perfectly and Waze started to work perfectly as well in Apple carplay.

My advise would be to find out if there's a newer version of the car's software and ask the dealer to get it and install it. Do you have a way to see the software version in your car? If so, can you find out what the latest version is?

Hope this helps =D

I removed my car's SD navigation card, did a hard reboot of the head unit, and recalibrated my car's compass, and that fixed all the problems. I did some testing early this morning, and my CarPlay is 100% perfect again. So it was my car after all.

I guess something became corrupted after I installed the software update last week. But a hard reboot fixed everything.
