Everything works in Apple CarPlay except navigation apps

I recently bought a new car (Mercedes Benz CLA 180) and tried using Apple CarPlay in it. Everything else works except navigation apps. When I use either Google maps or Apple maps, the current location gets constantly switched between the actual current location and somewhere in the middle of the sea near Thailand every now and then. Even apps like Find iPhone also shows the same incorrect location when maps are showing the wrong location. All apps works fine when not using CarPlay.

I tested with two iPhone X devices (mine and my wife's) with iOS 12 and I see the same issue on both.

Tested with an iPhone 6s running iOS 11 and still the GPS issue is there.

Tested with Google Maps on Android Auto on my brothers phone and it works correctly!

Has anyone ever seen anything similar?

I tried with iOS 13 and it seems the issue I have mentioned in the first post is fixed now.

However, GPS coordinates received are still slightly off from my actual location. Some apps like Waze seems to handle these errors but Google Maps sometimes goes haywire and starts rerouting.

For what it's worth, in my case the issue was the headunit. For this specific navigation issue, if you are seeing the exact same behavior across Apple Maps, Google Maps and Waze, then it is almost certainly an issue with the head unit given that the wireless protocol for Carplay requires those apps to simply trust the navigation data from the head unit. Whether it is easy to fix or not is an entirely different question. I had to opt for a different head unit altogether, but have had no issues since (using the same phone).

Thanks for the info, this is getting somewhere...

Quick question, in your particular case were you able to navigate normally at first and then got the issue (after a couple of hours of driving with a navigation carplay app running)?

Best!

I had a similar problem in my car, Waze was unable to track my position in Apple carplay but the car's in dash navigation tracked it perfectly.

In my case the software update fixed the issue 100%. After the update, the car's in dash navigation continued to work perfectly and Waze started to work perfectly as well in Apple carplay.

My advise would be to find out if there's a newer version of the car's software and ask the dealer to get it and install it. Do you have a way to see the software version in your car? If so, can you find out what the latest version is?

Hope this helps =D

No, they really can't, or likely won't.

The phone will preferentially use GPS information from the car's head end, and the phone can't just determine whose GPS is more accurate.

I can see offering a choice of which GPS data to use being a support nightmare.

For wired CarPlay systems, GPS capability is optional.

For wireless CarPlay systems, GPS capability is required.

The issue seems to be in many vehicles the head unit is providing GPS data regardless of whether it actually has accurate position information to provide, and the problem is the protocol is designed assuming the head end will do the right thing.

As strange as it sounds, some head units have GPS even though they don’t have navigation.

The important thing to remember is that as soon as you connect via CarPlay, the phone stops using its own location services and asks the head end for location data.

For various reasons, the head end can send your phone incorrect location data, resulting in what you experienced.

RKPedersen — I have a few posts earlier in this thread but I had the same problem with the iLX-107. I went through three different GPS antennas and two different iLX-107 units. I tried every antenna location imaginable including the roof. Not to mention I lost two months of weekends messing with it.

Based on my experience, I think the following scenarios are possible:

1) the iLX-107 model is just bad. It was released in 2017 and maybe Apple changed something in the newer phones like the 8 and the X(s). Alpine has not released a firmware update in that time. That said, I think this scenario seems unlikely because far more people would be upset. Although there are many posts about similar issues, the experience is too bad to ignore.

So that leaves the following possibilities...

2) I used the same wire harness across all the tests I performed with the iLX-107’s. It is possible there was something wrong with the harness. In particular I would look at the speed wire based on the behavior and some other things I read.

3) there is an issue with my 2014 Subaru Forester that caused the problem, likely related to the speed wire data or the OBD feed.

I finally fixed the problem by swapping in a new Pioneer unit with built in navigation. It has worked flawlessly from the beginning, although I don’t like the design as much as the iLX-107 and it was more expensive. The Pioneer unit involved a new wire harness, so scenario 2 above is still possible. However, I did receive an error with the Pioneer early on that the speed data from the car was unreliable, which was interesting. It seemed like the Pioneer unit had a feature to detect and ignore such a problem. I’ve never had an issue with the location on any of the CarPlay GPS apps (Apple Maps, Google Maps, Waze) so I didn’t bother investigating the early error message further, so scenario 3 above is still possible. Given the Pioneer has its own navigation system, I’m guessing the native map data on the unit causes the GPS information fed back to CarPlay to be more accurate and not veer off the road due to small variations.

Hopefully my experience may lead you in the right direction and prevent some lost time troubleshooting.

I removed my car's SD navigation card, did a hard reboot of the head unit, and recalibrated my car's compass, and that fixed all the problems. I did some testing early this morning, and my CarPlay is 100% perfect again. So it was my car after all.

I guess something became corrupted after I installed the software update last week. But a hard reboot fixed everything.

Hi, everyone. I just started experiencing similar issues. I have an iPhone Xs Max, running iOS 12.4. I drive a 2018 Genesis G80. I have never had any issues using CarPlay. NEVER.

At least, unti last week. Coincidentally, last week I updated my car's navigation software (from MapNSoft) to the latest version, which was 13.5 for Hyundai/Genesis vehicles. Updating the software not only updates the maps for the in-dash navi, but it also updates the entire infotainment system, including Apple CarPlay functions. Ever since that update, Apple CarPlay has trouble tracking my vehicle. If I'm navigating somewhere with directions, it works pretty well, except when I drive into a tunnel, or through a long underpass. Then it loses me until I come out the other side. But if I drive without a specific destination programmed, the maps don't seem to know where I am.

To test this, I went into my friend's Hyundai, which uses an older infotainment build. I plugged my phone in, and it worked PERFECTLY. Then we went to my car, and had issues again. We even plugged my friend's iPhone into my car, and he had the same issues. So it's definitely not our phones. Considering that this all began after updating my car's head unit, it has to be the car. Although oddly, the issues are sporadic. Sometimes it's perfect. Sometimes it's hit or miss. Sometimes it's horrible.

Note: Outside of my CarPlay navigational issues, my car's in-dash navi works perfectly. So I don't believe it's my car's GPS antenna or anything of the sort.

Hey dacoolest,

I hear that CarPlay isn't working on multiple devices in your car. I'd be happy to help out.

You've done great steps so far with testing on different devices. To continue, I'd recommend using these steps:

How to use CarPlay with your iPhone - Apple Support

If CarPlay doesn't work like you expect, make sure that your iPhone has the latest version of iOS. After your iPhone is updated, follow these steps—checking CarPlay after each step:

  1. If CarPlay doesn't activate automatically, look for the CarPlay logo on your car's display.
  2. Restart your iPhone and your car.
  3. Make sure that Siri is on.
  4. If your iPhone isn't detected by CarPlay, make sure that CarPlay isn't restricted. Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions, tap Allowed Apps and make sure that CarPlay is enabled.
  5. Go to Settings > General > CarPlay, and tap Forget This Car.
  6. Check your connection:
    • If you have a wired connection, try connecting again with a different USB cable to a different USB port if you have one.
    • If you have a wireless connection, enable AirPlane mode by going to Settings > Airplane Mode. Don't enable Airplane Mode from Control Center.
  7. If needed, install firmware updates. Check your car's manual for more information.

If you still have issues connecting to CarPlay, contact Apple Support.

Cheers!
