Everything works in Apple CarPlay except navigation apps

I recently bought a new car (Mercedes Benz CLA 180) and tried using Apple CarPlay in it. Everything else works except navigation apps. When I use either Google maps or Apple maps, the current location gets constantly switched between the actual current location and somewhere in the middle of the sea near Thailand every now and then. Even apps like Find iPhone also shows the same incorrect location when maps are showing the wrong location. All apps works fine when not using CarPlay.

I tested with two iPhone X devices (mine and my wife's) with iOS 12 and I see the same issue on both.

Tested with an iPhone 6s running iOS 11 and still the GPS issue is there.

Tested with Google Maps on Android Auto on my brothers phone and it works correctly!

Has anyone ever seen anything similar?

Hi joelfromberkeley, and thank you for your feedback.

1) Notice that my unit is a 702D, so maybe some slight differences there though I have not compared

2) I tried last evening with a new cable with no change in luck:-(

3) regarding I have my setup installed in a 2010 Ford S-Max.

I downloaded the app from IOS app store yesterday also named GPS diagnostic. It turned out that in car drinving it indicated all green signal when not docked. However, when I docked it to CarPlay the GPS signal lowered in intensity and even one of the signal colums turned red:-(

So as others has indicated then it seems that the quality of the signal gets worse when docked and that could be to blame?

No matter where I placed the antennna (Inside cabinet, front area of glass window or outside on top of roof) I got a poor result.

So something happens when docing and unit anteanne takes over.

RKPedersen -- I actually used the same app for troubleshooting, but someone earlier in this thread rightly pointed out that if the app doesn't support CarPlay, it likely isn't measuring the car's GPS but the phone's GPS. Sounds like you are still seeing a difference, which I can't explain, but I didn't see much of a difference using GPS Diagnostic when connected vs. not connected to CarPlay.

Mine was extremely buggy today. One time it was messed up for at least 5 minutes. I then updated to 12.3 and it was fine the 12 minute ride after that. I won’t say it’s fixed after many more rides though as it will be fine for awhile and then I’ll have a day like today where it was F’ed a lot.

Since I updated to 12.3 last week, I had no issues with GPS (and I was using every drive) until Friday, when for about 15 seconds, my location was wrong. No issues during several trips yesterday. So it definitely seems like 12.3 has lessened my issues, but definitely not fixed it completely.

I tried with iOS 13 and it seems the issue I have mentioned in the first post is fixed now.

However, GPS coordinates received are still slightly off from my actual location. Some apps like Waze seems to handle these errors but Google Maps sometimes goes haywire and starts rerouting.

I have the same problem, BMW G20 3 series with wireless carplay. When I start navigating it works ok for 30 minutes or so, then location goes crazy. Today it was stating the right position but the wrong direction for some reason so waze kept recalculating the route. Also when the issue happened today I touched the phone and it was VERY hot. Next week I have a long drive (3h or so) and I’ll bring 2 iPhones, as soon as the issue happens I’ll switch to the other iPhone and see if waze works correctly with the “fresh” phone. If it does I’ll report the workaround working here.

seems like Apple issue given that my issue is with an Acura and yours is BMW - and I have seen many car brands on this forum? My frustration also is I didn’t have this until this week - when I had to restore my iPhone given other issues - then this issue came about. Apple has no fix?

Also Apple has no fix, the problem happens to a few unlucky users and we are not in their radar (I guess)

Let's hope they do know about us and IOS13 solves the issue. The final release should be around mid September going by previous IOS releases.

In the meantime we all need to try to narrow down the problem and formulate a temporary workaround. Maybe it's some other app installed in the phone; has anyone reset their phone to factory settings and try to see if a factory settings iphone with apple maps works without issue?

Apple replaced my phone and that didn't fix it. And when it happens on my phone, all mapping apps are affected the same - Waze, Google Maps, and Apple Maps. Honda also replaced my entire head unit because of it. At this point I have zero hope it will ever be fixed and I might move to Android because of it.

If Apple works around the issue it will only be by somehow detecting incorrect position/speed information fed it by your car, and I'm not aware of how it would do that on any kind of reasonable basis.

To revert to using the device's own location data would be violating their own guidelines.

The better question is why disparate head ends seem to be providing incorrect location data when so many others are able to get it right.

Note that wireless CarPlay is required to use the data provided by your car.

If you quite your navigation app and restart it, does it "see" the correct location and lose it over the course of a drive?

I just used my XS Max for several multi-hour drives and did not experience what you did using wired CarPlay in a 2019 Dodge Challenger R/T.

The GPS position in the car is correct, I know this because the car always displays the map in the digital dashboard correctly even when waze goes crazy in the infotainment display (the bmws have this digital dashboard with speed, tacometer and map)

I’ll try to gather more info but my money right now would be on the iphone doing some form of optimization when it gets too hot or when to much energy is being drained in a short period of time. The optimization causes the data to arrive in a corrupt state to the navigation apps.

If I quit waze and restart it right away the problem persists. If both the car and the phone “rest” for 30 minutes or so then the GPS works correctly for another 2 hours or so.

Location on the car is correct as it displays correctly at all times in the digital dashboard.

And yes, wireless carplay requires the car to supply all location data, it’s very important that everyone in the thread is well aware of this fact

thqnks!

It has my correct location when I start app - but in middle of drive it doesn’t note me turning or even moving - waze arrow actually disappears and becomes a dot - so it loses me - and then eventually finds me. I switch to google maps and that one had me driving the opposite way on map. This doesn’t always happen - but when it does it makes Apple CarPlay useless and I switch back to using app without CarPlay - which sucks because I paid for a car with CarPlay - help!
