Phone app freezes/gets stuck since iOS 12

Good day,

I am using an iPhone X with 256 GB storage, updated to iOS 12.0 (16A366). Since the update my Phone app freezes on the contacts screen. It's quite particular, because when the Phone app freezes, then the photo in "My Contact Card" disappears, the screen becomes unresponsive, I can force quite the Phone app and when I open the app again it launches straight into the same screen and is unresponsive. During all this time, all other apps on the iPhone work correctly. The issue is strictly limited to the Phone app, which is kind'a crucial to the iPhone.

The only solution is restarting the iPhone which brings relief for a couple of days, before the same symptoms return.

I would love to hear anybody who has the same issue and, better yet, has found a solution.

Best regards

V

Solution found.

All:

I have an SE that the phone app freezes on.

Contacting Apple support got an almost pathetically Microsoft bad answer: backup, wipe, install, restore.

I told them it had been two weeks since this mistake on their part crippled our phones. They suggested as a workaround, using Siri ("Hey Siri dial XXXXXXX") or Contacts to make outbound calls. "Hey Siri check my voicemail" can also be used to access voicemail!

Apple support was not able to help with fixing this problem. However, while chatting with a tech by the handle “Mikey” last night I found a solution. The key nugget of info was this:

-> Updating over WiFi only changes the sections of the iOS code on your phone that has been changed In the new version.

-> Updating over a wire with iTunes REPLACES the iOS entirely on the device.

So if your phone is jacked up, here is what you do:

1) Update iTunes on your desktop/laptop. You need the latest version.

2) Connect your iPhone to your desktop/laptop.

3) Backup your phone to your deskto/laptop.

4) Leaving the wire connected, hard reboot the phone:

- iPhone SE and older, hold down “home” and “power” for 45 seconds or longer.

- Other newer models do the vol up, vol down, power, hold for 45 seconds.

5) Phone will reboot. KEEP HOLDING!

6) iTunes will say “there is a problem with the iPhone...”

7) Click “update”

8) iTunes will download an update and will install when download complete... mine was about 2.8 Mb.

9) Your desktop/laptop will decompress the file and then start pushing it to the phone.

- “iTunes is preparing to update the software on the phone”

10) Wait a bit

11) “iTunes is updating the software on the phone”

12) you will see the “Apple“ screen in your phone with a progress bar below the Apple showing how far the installation has progressed.

13) When the update is finished, it will say “Verifying the updated iPhone”

14) Phone reboots

15) When your phone wakes up, you will have to unlock your phone for the push to continue.

16) When it reboots, you will see “Syncing iPhone”

Now your phone app should work.

So the lesson learned is to push iOS updates over a wire with iTunes rather than downloading over WiFi.

I am not sure why Apple could not figure out this smoking tire fire of a disaster, but based on my experience this solved the problem.

I've been having the same problem with my iPhone 6 ever since I updated to iOS 12. The recent contacts, contacts, or voicemail screen will randomly lock up. Forcing the screen closed won't remedy the issue and I am forced to reboot my iPhone everytime this occurs. I did realize that only SOMETIMES if you hold the power button like your going to turn off your phone, once the slider shows up if you just hold the home button until it takes you back to the app screen it will SOMETIMES correct the freeze issue, but not always. Very annoying issue though having to reboot my phone everytime it decided to lock up.

Like others have commented, this seems to occur following listening to voicemail. I listened to two voicemails today and the phone app froze on both occasions and could not be used until the phone was rebooted. Apple---this is a SERIOUS issue! What if I need to make an emergency call and the phone app is frozen. First and foremost this product is a PHONE and should work as such. I have an iPhone XS running iOS 12.1.4. Please address this issue.

I’m having the same issue.

My phone app will sometimes unstick if I put it in airplane mode for about sixty seconds before turning airplane mode off. When I return to the phone app it may work again. Sometimes my phone app crashes while it’s stuck.

Fix it, Apple! I paid a lot for this iPhone X and I’d like it to work. What if there’s an emergency and my stupid phone app can’t call for help!?

Dear i_rina, Thank you for taking the time to write me back so kindly. I must admit though that your answer is the equivalent of a typical helpdesk's answer "Please restart your computer and check if you still experience the same issues.".

The default answer to my issue should not be backup, restore to factory settings, restore data.

This type of action requires hours of work when the issue might be somewhere completely different.

One of the reasons why I publish a concern is to see if other people experience the same issues and create awareness on the Apple side, that there might be an issue, if more and more people see the same issue.

Anyways ... I have now updated to the newest release of iOS 12 and will see if the issue was solved. It's not the first time, that smaller issues have been identified by Apple, fixed in a release, without appearing in release notes.

I do want to say thank you though that you took the time to write back.

Yes - I have exactly the same issue with my iPhone X since i updated to IOS 12 and it has even happened since the last incremental update to IOS 12 a couple of days ago (so not fixed yet!)

Complete screen freeze on the Phone App while other Apps are absolutely fine. You can even make a call if you access the number from another app such as Messaging or Contacts - just not from the Phone app itself.

Force quitting the app and re-opening doesn't work - only solution is to re-boot the device.

Happens every few days.

Really hoping Apple picks this up due to volume of concerns (that's why I'm adding my voice): Backing up, resetting and restoring is a bit of a cop out - especially since there's no indication that that will even solve the problem.

Best Regards,

C.

Solution!!! Great work. This fixed my issue with a 6plus. Took me a few tries but key was to keep holding the buttons UNTIL the message appeared that there is a problem, not just when it appeared to reboot. Scary to do, but worked completely. E sure to back up per the instructions in case of some failure. Great work! Hope Apple can find a software fix for all those thaybdont read these updates!

So I tried and tried to ge the "full monte" reload to work. I pressed and held my buttons with a death grip, but never got the prompt to install from iTunes. The funny thing is, ever since my failed attempts to reload via iTunes, the phone app has worked without freezing up. Hmmm... another case of devine mantainence, or just coincidence? I also live in an area where my cell network is very weak, so it could be something about the phone going on and off the cell network. Hard to tell, but it surely did not happen before I upgraded to iOS 12.

This has been plaguing my 7 since iOS 10. I was hoping it was just a software issue but they recently updated my iOS to 12 and it happened again. It’s random. Often doing something else then switching back to phone app when it happens. Power off/power on “fixes” it but the unpredictable nature of the issue is problematic. So based on the wide range of comments, I am starting to rule out device and iOS.

I have an iphone SE. It has continued to freeze in the phone app multiple times ever since the 12.0.1, requiring a power off/on to get it to unfreeze since then. I'm not a "power user", but if I'm getting this right, Apple grossly impaired our ability to use our phones as phones through an AUTOMATIC update, and they have taken no action whatsoever to AUTOMATICALLY fix the bug for the last month. Apple needs to fix this universally, and fast. No excuses.

I updated to 12.1, but I still have the same problems -- and I made sure to do the update via cable and iTunes. Still crashes on open with great frequency.

New issue is it sometimes opens to a completely blank screen, which it didn't do previously. When it does that, it crashes very soon.

Other times when it opens, it has the grey dots instead of images. If I wait, I may get functionality, or it may crash.

When it opens with the images, it may or may not function immediately. If it doesn't respond to selecting different tabs, it won't function.

Visual Voicemail is still non-functional.

Siri still works great.
