Phone app freezes/gets stuck since iOS 12

Good day,

I am using an iPhone X with 256 GB storage, updated to iOS 12.0 (16A366). Since the update my Phone app freezes on the contacts screen. It's quite particular, because when the Phone app freezes, then the photo in "My Contact Card" disappears, the screen becomes unresponsive, I can force quite the Phone app and when I open the app again it launches straight into the same screen and is unresponsive. During all this time, all other apps on the iPhone work correctly. The issue is strictly limited to the Phone app, which is kind'a crucial to the iPhone.

The only solution is restarting the iPhone which brings relief for a couple of days, before the same symptoms return.

I would love to hear anybody who has the same issue and, better yet, has found a solution.

Best regards

V

Solution found.

All:

I have an SE that the phone app freezes on.

Contacting Apple support got an almost pathetically Microsoft bad answer: backup, wipe, install, restore.

I told them it had been two weeks since this mistake on their part crippled our phones. They suggested as a workaround, using Siri ("Hey Siri dial XXXXXXX") or Contacts to make outbound calls. "Hey Siri check my voicemail" can also be used to access voicemail!

Apple support was not able to help with fixing this problem. However, while chatting with a tech by the handle “Mikey” last night I found a solution. The key nugget of info was this:

-> Updating over WiFi only changes the sections of the iOS code on your phone that has been changed In the new version.

-> Updating over a wire with iTunes REPLACES the iOS entirely on the device.

So if your phone is jacked up, here is what you do:

1) Update iTunes on your desktop/laptop. You need the latest version.

2) Connect your iPhone to your desktop/laptop.

3) Backup your phone to your deskto/laptop.

4) Leaving the wire connected, hard reboot the phone:

- iPhone SE and older, hold down “home” and “power” for 45 seconds or longer.

- Other newer models do the vol up, vol down, power, hold for 45 seconds.

5) Phone will reboot. KEEP HOLDING!

6) iTunes will say “there is a problem with the iPhone...”

7) Click “update”

8) iTunes will download an update and will install when download complete... mine was about 2.8 Mb.

9) Your desktop/laptop will decompress the file and then start pushing it to the phone.

- “iTunes is preparing to update the software on the phone”

10) Wait a bit

11) “iTunes is updating the software on the phone”

12) you will see the “Apple“ screen in your phone with a progress bar below the Apple showing how far the installation has progressed.

13) When the update is finished, it will say “Verifying the updated iPhone”

14) Phone reboots

15) When your phone wakes up, you will have to unlock your phone for the push to continue.

16) When it reboots, you will see “Syncing iPhone”

Now your phone app should work.

So the lesson learned is to push iOS updates over a wire with iTunes rather than downloading over WiFi.

I am not sure why Apple could not figure out this smoking tire fire of a disaster, but based on my experience this solved the problem.

I have the same problem on iPhone 5S.

The only way to use the screen is to tap an icon, and wait for a square to appear around it, then tap it quickly two or three times to use that icon or character or number.

Restored the phone by cable connect to PC using iTunes (had to turn off Find My iPhone before it would work.)

Then the same problem occurred about 18 hours later.

Clearly it is an IOS12.1 issue and should be addressed by Apple.

About 4 weeks ago, I made an appt with the Genius Bar for this issue. I was told my solution was either factory reboot or contact my service provider, ATT as it was most likely their issue. I updated to IOS 12.1.4 and still not fixed. I wondered yesterday when I tried to make a call and the keyboard froze- what if it was an emergency and I needed to call 911? I’m a loyal Apple user and stockholder and I might be done with Apple after this.

I'm also suffering with this issue, and have done ever since the release of iOS 12 and every update since.

What particularly seems to 'kill it' for me is if I've recently received a voicemail (visual) - it just locks for 15-30 seconds then generally works okay.

It also freezes on occasions when I go to the phone app to and then switch between recents to contacts and vise-versa.

Most frustrating.

I am facing exactly the same issue on my iPhone XR 64. I checked free memory, and it was about 50GB, so it can't be a memory issue. I took the phone to the local apple store early this month, and they resetted it to the factory settings. It wasted four hours of mine restoring/reinstalling my other apps. It seems like the problem is not solved. My phone app hung again. I also experienced the similar issue with other apps as well like camera and CNN. They too became unresponsive for some time, when I wanted to use them. The tech support at the apple store did the "reset all settings", yesterday. I hope it has solved the problem, I really do. Otherwise, I am going back to Android. To me the phone is the most important application, the rest all are add-ons. If the phone apps does not work, I shudder to say that, "iPhone may be smart, but not smartphone for sure".

I’m a gmail user and synch my contacts through google and I have the same problem. I actually uploaded all my contacts to my iCloud account thinking it was a google synch issue, nope, both google and iCloud contacts synch locked up my contacts app. As others have said, restarting my 256gb iphone x will work for a few days... So frustrating

I'm having the same issue with my iphone 8, It's random and not all the time. I was hoping that the 12.1 update would fix it, but a few hours after the update it did it once again.

I noticed to that a weird thing is happening on my phone. My Iphone has the Jabber app on it that is connected to my work land line number. So when someone calls me on my work phone it can ring on my cell phone. Today I received a call on both phones, I was right by my desk so I picked up the office landline phone. When I hung up with the person I was talking on my work landline phone, my cell phone jabber app opened and begin ringing as if someone was calling me from the number I had just finished hanging up. But there was no call on my work landline. It was weird to say the least.

But this continues to be a problem. My wife has a newer iphone 8 (Brought it recently as I brought mine 1 year ago) and it hasn't happened to her as of yet.

The start and restart works to fix it, but for a phone that cost $$$ this shouldn't be happening at all. And I shouldn't have to restart my phone to use my phone.

Hmm, that has not been my experience. My experience has been that if the phone app gets stuck, it remains stuck. If I leave the app open, it eventually just quits on its own. I don't recall it ever becoming unstuck. To be honest, though, I no longer wait...:)

Maybe I'll have to load 12.0.1 to see if this is a (slight) change.

I have a 5SE with the same issue ever since updating to 12.0.0. The 12.0.1 update didn't seem to fix anything and restarting only worked the first few times. At least now it is suck on "Recents" so I can see what calls I've missed. Would be nice to hear voicemails though...

I've never had an issue like this before with other phones. I happened to be looking at upgrading when these freezes started occurring and this is really making me consider switching from Apple for my next phone. I'm just not sure if I am ready to give up the ability to place phone calls from my phone just yet.
