Phone app freezes/gets stuck since iOS 12

Good day,

I am using an iPhone X with 256 GB storage, updated to iOS 12.0 (16A366). Since the update my Phone app freezes on the contacts screen. It's quite particular, because when the Phone app freezes, then the photo in "My Contact Card" disappears, the screen becomes unresponsive, I can force quite the Phone app and when I open the app again it launches straight into the same screen and is unresponsive. During all this time, all other apps on the iPhone work correctly. The issue is strictly limited to the Phone app, which is kind'a crucial to the iPhone.

The only solution is restarting the iPhone which brings relief for a couple of days, before the same symptoms return.

I would love to hear anybody who has the same issue and, better yet, has found a solution.

Best regards

V

Solution found.

All:

I have an SE that the phone app freezes on.

Contacting Apple support got an almost pathetically Microsoft bad answer: backup, wipe, install, restore.

I told them it had been two weeks since this mistake on their part crippled our phones. They suggested as a workaround, using Siri ("Hey Siri dial XXXXXXX") or Contacts to make outbound calls. "Hey Siri check my voicemail" can also be used to access voicemail!

Apple support was not able to help with fixing this problem. However, while chatting with a tech by the handle “Mikey” last night I found a solution. The key nugget of info was this:

-> Updating over WiFi only changes the sections of the iOS code on your phone that has been changed In the new version.

-> Updating over a wire with iTunes REPLACES the iOS entirely on the device.

So if your phone is jacked up, here is what you do:

1) Update iTunes on your desktop/laptop. You need the latest version.

2) Connect your iPhone to your desktop/laptop.

3) Backup your phone to your deskto/laptop.

4) Leaving the wire connected, hard reboot the phone:

- iPhone SE and older, hold down “home” and “power” for 45 seconds or longer.

- Other newer models do the vol up, vol down, power, hold for 45 seconds.

5) Phone will reboot. KEEP HOLDING!

6) iTunes will say “there is a problem with the iPhone...”

7) Click “update”

8) iTunes will download an update and will install when download complete... mine was about 2.8 Mb.

9) Your desktop/laptop will decompress the file and then start pushing it to the phone.

- “iTunes is preparing to update the software on the phone”

10) Wait a bit

11) “iTunes is updating the software on the phone”

12) you will see the “Apple“ screen in your phone with a progress bar below the Apple showing how far the installation has progressed.

13) When the update is finished, it will say “Verifying the updated iPhone”

14) Phone reboots

15) When your phone wakes up, you will have to unlock your phone for the push to continue.

16) When it reboots, you will see “Syncing iPhone”

Now your phone app should work.

So the lesson learned is to push iOS updates over a wire with iTunes rather than downloading over WiFi.

I am not sure why Apple could not figure out this smoking tire fire of a disaster, but based on my experience this solved the problem.

DSchorow, I’m glad your system is working again. Very good point re intermittent bugs.

Could you please tell me if the 20 vm you deleted were pre-iOS 12 or were all new? My question is because I am wondering if the transcription was fouled up because they were old. I’m just curious. I have no other answers and this bug is really annoying me.

Re: JimFerguson’s comment — I had no issues with settings, books or podcasts, or anything but what involved the phone. I had not previously heard of other Apple apps having a similar or same glitch. I’m sorry he has had multiple issues. I’m sure that is frustrating too!!

Thanks!

Hi, Jim, I only had the proble with phone-related apps, no problem with settings, books or podcasts that I noticed. And I know I was in and out of books & settings, especially settings.

Have you been doing the tethered updates or the WiFi uodates?

I have no answers, I’m merely curious. The second released update I did

tethered fixed the issues I had. The first tethered update I tried was an overwrite of a WiFi one of the same release and while I did it repeatedly, I’m not sure it actually did the forced re-update. I turned off the automatic updates and did it manually when the next one came out.

I am cringing about the update that was just released. I don’t want the problem to start again, but I also want to see if it comes back. I haven’t done it yet.

Not exactly. As I said I'm "Almost" having the same issue. I'm just using my iphone for calls, whatsapp and banking applications, nothing more. So the biggest problem I'm facing is my Phone App is freezing which is a big deal for me. Beside that I've experinced other freeze issues additional to Phone App which I've mentioned earlier. The important part is there was no problem before 12.1.2 and obviously there is no solution to that. I've searched lots of web sites and nobody can offer anything besides reboot, reset to factory settings and re-install all the apps once again. Beleive me none of them are related to that issue, this is obviously an ios prblem and there is nothing we can do. Apple make everyone just sit tight and wait for the next update and cross your fingers or pray so the next update will solve your problems.

Apple will see the same fate as Nokia if they won't handle these situations well. There is a very simple solution to avoid such things but they are avoiding in order to raise their profit. They can offer in the software a returning point to the last ios version and if the new update creates a problem for you, you can simply return back to the last good one, or offer a couple options to the end-users.

I hope someone reads these articles so people can have some kind of solution. Ofcourse their appetite is always selling new ones but thats not the solution. If you do not service your current users the end will come someday.

My phone has been having the same issue. It freezes and/or crashes. Sometimes the voicemail notifications don’t come. Not good for a small business. Also have noticed my iphone will just shut off unexpectedly on the rare occasion. (IPhone 6–iOS 12.1.3) I hope it can be resolved soon. Resetting is a temporary fix.

this reply is just for the record if Apple needs a head count. We pay way too much for their products for them to be unreliable or for these glitches to not get fixed.

I've encounter the same issue with my iPhone8 since iOS 12. I've tried everything I can think of including resetting all the setting to default but the issue continues. Only reboot could solve the problem for a short period of time ( a few hours) and the problem occurred again. It's never been so frustrating with all my apple devices in the past 10 years until this one. What can be done to fix it?

I have used an iPhone 6 for about 4 years with no problems - a very good and reliable product - the kind of thing that made us all fans and not worry about the premium pricing. So I did the update to 12.1.4 about 8/9 days ago. Since then then my lovely iPhone started faulting with the same pattern of random freezes and required booting up. Nothing in my phone had changed so I reasonably concluded that the release engineering if IOS 12.1.4 had been poorly tested. I did a factory reset. No change. So I went to my local Apple shop and traded the iPhone 6 for a new iPhone 8 plus which I was already planning to do. So now I have a three day old iPhone 8 plus, set up in the Apple shop doing the same thing. I just tried using the timer and tapped the clock icon and the phone froze needing a reboot. I have also noted that when the phone sleeps after a brief period of non use, it seems to take a good few second to display the lock screen (maybe 5 to10- seconds). This is very disappointing. Seems like the stockholders and the accountants are taking over. Makes me rethink about why I am buying apple products. I just spent a lot of money on a new Mac Mini 2018. Apple need to rapidly fix there customers problems and spare us all the marketing speak. If I cant resolve my iPhone problems in the the next 5 working days I will return the phone and demand a refund. I guess I may go back to an android phone. I need a 100% reliable phone.
