issues with display/desktop number assignment

I'll start by saying that I'm completely new to using more than one monitor on Mac OS and there is probably something evident I'm overlooking with this issue.

The display I'm having issues with is a Wacom Cintiq 13HD. I initially managed to get the display to work how I wanted it (i.e. apps opening on certain desktops and so on) but an issue with my mouse caused me to unplug the display and plug it back in again. In hindsight, not a good idea.

Now, the issue I'm having is that my Mac now doesn't seem to want to pick up my Cintiq as "Desktop 2" and vice versa (screenshot 1). Whenever I add a new desktop to my existing "Desktop 1", the Cintiq changes to "Desktop 3" and goes up one number with each "desktop" I add (screenshot 2 and 3):

and this is an issue as I can't get Mission Control to assign apps to a certain desktop without making a "Desktop 2", which does not assign itself to my tablet for some reason. As a result, the app I use to draw doesn't open properly on one display and instead tries to open on both display, rendering it next to unusable. I'm also unable to get the app to open on "Desktop 3". If there's a way to do that, I haven't found it yet.

I've tried the following:

- deleting the cache file and resetting PRAM

- reinstalling the tablet

If there's any other information that is needed, I'll be happy to provide it. Thanks for your time. I'm using an iMac that is running High Sierra, for reference.

iMac, macOS High Sierra (10.13.6)
