Hi everyone.

So my late 2011 Macbook Pro is all of a sudden not starting. I'll get to my user log in screen, which has weird stripes or bars. Then once I enter my computer password, it proceeds to start, but then just shuts down, or restarts bringing me back to the log in screen. I've also tried to boot in Recovery Mode with Command + R. That always works. Then I tried to verify and repair disk, but no issues found. The computer is also running noticeably more sluggish too.

If your Mac spontaneously restarts or displays a message that it restarted or shut down because of a problem - Apple Support

Reinstall El Capitan or Later Without Erasing Drive


Please be sure you back up.


  1. Restart the computer. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Utility Menu appears.
  2. Select Disk Utility and click on the Continue button.
  3. Select the indented (usually, Macintosh HD) volume entry from the side list.
  4. Click on the First Aid icon in the toolbar. Wait until the Done button activates, then click on it.
  5. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu.
  6. Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
