Remove PlaySearchNow

How do I uninstall http://www.playsearchnow.com/ or Play Search Now.

Everytime I open Safari, It takes me to the playsearchnow.com website. I've checked my Safari/preferences/extensions and I originally had it listed as an extension. I unselected it, and the site keeps coming up. Additionally, my I can't reset the my browser page. Each time it reverts back to their website.

I've updated my home page in safari/preferences/general to Google and I've updated Safari/preferences/Search/search engine to Google from the drop down.

All my software is up to date.

I've been searching the apple forums for different solutions and keeping finding the same solution like you see from Dominic23 in this linkHow do I uninstall Play Search Now. I've followed all the steps Dominic 23 has outlined and it still doesn't get rid of playsearchnow.com. Please help! 🙂

For easy reference, I'm pasting the instructions from Dominic23 that I've already tried below:

You will have t do this after starting up in Safe Mode to prevent adware

from interfering with the removal of adware .

1. Shut down the computer.

Press the power button. Immediately after you hear the startup sound,

press and hold the Shift key.

The Shift key should be pressed as soon as possible after startup,

but not before the startup sound.

Release the Shift key when you see the Apple logo on the screen.

Startup will take longer than usual.

Screen flickering is normal in Safe Mode.

Login to your account. Launch Safari.

Enter this address https://www.malwarebytes.org/antimalware/mac/

on the Safari address bar.

Download, Install , open, and run it by clicking “Scan” button to remove adware, if present.

Once done, quit MalwareBytes.

2. Safari > Preferences > Extensions

Turn all extensions off

or uninstall all extensions you haven’t installed knowingly.

3. Safari > Preferences > Search > Search Engine :

Select your preferred search engine.

4. Safari > Preferences > General > Homepage:

Set your Homepage.

5. Restart normally using the “Restart” button.

From the EtreCheck report:

"

Configuration Profiles:

Information not available"

1 . Do you see any Profile listed that you have not added knowingly?

Profiles

System Preferences > Profiles

Launch System Preferences. Do you see any profiles added to the pane at the bottom?

If you see Profiles listed, click on it.

When the Profiles pane opens, select the profile and click the “-“ button at the bottom left corner to remove it.

I'm having the same issue with PlaySearchNow. I've tried all the suggested ways to remove it, unsuccessfully. This is super aggravating. Malwarebytes comes up clean with my previously installed version and a fresh one I had installed while in safe mode. I've tried the manual steps to remove it, but can't seem to find any sign of it. When the problem first occurred, there was an extension in safari for AnySearch, which I removed to trash and then emptied.

At your suggestion, I ran EtreCheck. Here is the output. Do you see anything that is concerning? Or have any additional suggestions to try?

I also suffered a common browser hijack (PlaySearchNow) from malware likely embedded in a fake adobe plug in from some website. nasty stuff. i was unable to follow the normal solution, which is start up MacBook in safe mode, as the malware likely did something to make that startup hang. and then run Malwarebytes as recommended in various chatrooms. safe mode is necessary so that the malware doesn't reinstall itself continually. I am a norton subscriber and i was able to get the problem solved quickly by their Spyware and Antivirus team in an online chat, where they took control of my laptop and removed the offending file(s). so far so good! highly recommended as I would have wasted hours trying to find a way to get to safe mode startup.
