OSX High Sierra encrypting SD

Sd Cards (Sandisk 32GB) can no longer be encrypted using Disk Utility. Apple support had nothing useful to say, except referring to the SD Card Manufacturer.

It worked on OSX Sierra, but going back does no make sense to me.

MacBook Air, macOS High Sierra (10.13.6)

Assuming it has been re-formated to HFS+, and a GUID scheme it should allow for encryption unless something is wrong with it.
