That was it. Secondary USB-lighting cable must supply power to the Apple AV Adapter. I had the same problem on my iPhone XS and daughters iPhone 7 and could not get the Apple AV adapter to work with any of the suggestions above with the exception to this last one. I plugged in the secondary USB-lighting cable to a standard wall adapter and life is good. No need to connect the USB cable to the TV. My only guess is that previously the AV adapter was able to grab power from the phone directly over the primary lighting connector, but not any more on IOS 12

I almost gave up on finding solution for my AV adaptor problems, but then I read this post about going to Settings > Display & brightness > then change “standard” view to “zoom.” I was very surprised and happy at the same time, when I tried to connect my iPhone to my TV using the AV adaptor and it finally works again! 😂

Thank you so much! I hope it will work on everyone!

I see that your Lightning Digital AV Adapter isn't working as expected. You're receiving audio content, but no video. I'm happy to help.

About Apple Digital AV Adapters for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Get help

Find out what to do when you have the following issues.

If you see video but can't hear audio

Make sure that you're using a Digital AV adapter (which has an HDMI port). If you're using a VGA adapter, it doesn't carry audio signals. To hear audio with a VGA adapter, you need to connect to the headset jack on your TV, monitor, projector, or stereo.

If an app doesn't display video or play audio

The app might not be compatible with your adapter. Check compatibility on the app's info page in the App Store or contact the developer.

If an alert says that an HDCP-compatible device is required

Your content might not be compatible with your adapter. Movies, TV shows, and certain streaming video apps require High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP). If you try to play these movies, shows, and streaming videos using a non-HDCP digital connection—like the Apple VGA Adapter—an alert will ask for an HDCP-compatible device.

If you need help with other issues

  1. Disconnect and reconnect your adapter from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch and from your TV, monitor, or projector.
  2. Make sure that your VGA or HDMI cable works, since the issue could be with the cable.
  3. Remove any VGA or HDMI extension cables or converters. Accessories that convert a VGA or HDMI signals to different video formats (DVI, Composite, Component) aren't compatible.
  4. Make sure that you have the latest version of iOS.

For more help, contact Apple Support, to set up service for your:

1. To find your accessory's model number, connect it to your iOS device and go to Settings > General > About > Apple HDMI Adapter.

2. The iPhone 4, iPad (1st generation), and iPod touch (4th generation) only display videos, photos, presentations, and slideshows on a secondary display. You can't mirror the entire screen.

Take care!

Zoom didn't work for me with same problem on iOS 12.0.1. With my 3rd party smart-cable connected to my TV's HDMI in, the TV screen's "Phone Link" display show code S500F2A1LG003V007 which is evidently the name of an iOS driver. When I read the QR code which is also on the screen, it takes me to an obscure free app from DrongCast which lists numerous downloadable drivers with similar names, but not the one on my screen. I try them all and none work. What a wild goose chase. Does Apple's HDMI adapter have the same problem now? Looks like an updated driver needs to be posted by Apple or DrongCast. It used to work so great :-(

Mine has been working on and off again after resetting with the zoom option. It will work fine for a few days then act up and not work for a day. Oh and I have the same problems on a Vizio and a Samsung TV, so it’s definitely not the tv manufacturers. It’s hit or miss. Apple needs to get their head out of their ***!!!!

It’s all in the iOS updates! My phone running on old 11.4.1 iOS works flawlessly.
