IOS 12.0.1 Microphone Not Working

I updated and now my microphone does not work. I cannot hear anyone when they calls, cannot use Siri and cannot use talk to text.

If I reset network settings it all works for a litle while, then stops again. I have an Iphone 7 Plus.

QUOTE FROM https://www.idownloadblog.com/2018/05/04/iphone-7-microphone-issue/

"Apple has ostensibly acknowledged a microphone issue with certain iPhone 7 models. The company says that some iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus units out there may experience issues with the built-in microphone. The problem appears to manifest itself on a limited number of devices after updating to iOS 11.3 or later. Apple distributed an internal document to its authorized service providers this week, a copy of which was obtained by MacRumors. The document states that these affected phones may exhibit a grayed-out speaker button during phone calls, preventing the user from being heard during phone calls or FaceTime video chats. Other symptoms may include lack of audio during playback of videos or voice memos recorded on an affected device. Apple’s support document which provides information about the microphones in iPhones, iPads and iPods makes no mention of this issue. From the MacRumors report: Apple Authorized Service Providers have been instructed to first ask customers to disconnect or power off any Bluetooth headsets or other audio accessories connected to their iPhone to see if that alleviates the problem. If the speaker button remains grayed out during a call, the service providers have been instructed to run audio diagnostics. Affected devices will display a ‘device could not detect dock’ or ‘accessory not supported’ alert in the diagnostic pane, in which case the service provider can initiate a repair for the iPhone. It’s not exactly clear if the iOS 11.3 could somehow be causing a hardware defect on these phones or if maybe this is a software-based issue that could be fixed with a future update. Be that as it may, out-out-warranty devices may be able to receive a repair or replacement for free, but that’s something a technician will determine on a case by case basis. This affects a limited number of iPhone 7/Plus models with iOS 11.3 or later".

Last Update:

After the hardware repair of the audio chip my IPhone works perfectly again.

Finally I paid 80€ and it took about 5 days to have it back. Much cheaper than a new phone. However, there are guys offering the same repair for less than 50€ but some of them seem to do the “quick fix” - just heating up the chip and not actually rebound. This might work or not .... some actually “fry it to death”. In Germany the range of cost for the exact same repair is between 45€ and more than 200€ - crazy. So keep your eyes open. Last comment: If you observe the described symptoms no software update will fix it - you will need the repair!!

Good luck :)

After talking with Apple Service and a smart technician it is 100% clear a hardware problem. As the phone is out of warranty there is basically nothing they are offering. Seems that this is a well know issue with the audiochip on the IPhone 7 that has a bad connection to the board (due to manufacturing issue, fall, whatever). The only way to fix this is to re-solder the chip - a quite difficult task. The official workshops from Apple does not do that in Germany. After some research I found a provider that offers that kind of service in Germany. However that repair will cost 150€ !!! As my phone is just a little bit older than 2 years I will do that step ...

I will report the result!

Hi all, I found the solution for this problem at least in my case. It is not an hardware related problem but a software one, because I had sound and mic on WhatsApp call, but I have screen time settings for me and my family.

I went to Screen Time settings, and the disable, deleted all screen time restrictions and finally enabled new settings.

it looks like there is some bug on settings that affect microphone and mic of the phone app

Hi Guys I am in exact same boat like u

let me tel u what happened when I took my iPhone twice in last 2 days to Apple store here.

so yest one guy tried to troubleshoot the issue and told me to reset the network settings, somehow that worked and he send me off. After 10 mins my phone again stopped working. Can’t hear anything, voice memo not working, front video( has no audio) and same with the back videos

then again I set up an appt today with Apple store, I was told by another customer support person that I have a motherboard issue which they cannot sort out. They told me I am out of warranty by 5 months and they won’t consider. I have to buy a new one. I was so disheartened as it’s not my mistake because Apple has a glitch they couldn’t fix it!!

so at last now at home I thot let me not give up on my phone, I tried this -

go to your settings - general- reset- reset all settings!! Boom sorted my issue of no audio from anywhere!

I dint lose my data or anything!

Please guys give this a shot?

Hope it sorts things out for you

Ended up going to Apple store where they plugged it in and confirmed that it was a hardware issue. Made claim to insurance and they replaced with a new phone with little over $100 deductible. Seems to me like a weakness of iPhone 7's soldering and is a material defect in construction and should be replaced by Apple no charge, but that's my two cents (less $100 deductible).

Post ios 12.3.1 update-- After losing my microphone so that I could not record audio notes or use the phone and trying _most_ of the solutions offered up here, I finally tried resetting my network settings on my iPhone 7 (before going all the way and resetting the phone to factory settings). The problem was resolved. At least for the moment. It appears after reading all these posts that some fixes are only temporary. NOTE: don't forget to rejoin your home/main wifi network after a network reset or else all your data will count against your data allowance because it will be coming through 3g/4g. Or, if you are like me and have really lousy reception at home, no data will come through at all!

I have made some progress on the phone with apple support; they’ve told me that with the installation of iOS 12 there was a hardware stress test done on the phone, to see if the hardware is capable of dealing with certain new software. In my case his has caused the microphone to first go bad and eventually fail (in space of 1 week) Apple support argues that the microphone was about to break down anyway, and the stress test accelerated this process. My phone was 3 weeks out of warranty when this all happened. I am now in the process of getting this repaired by apple, but will have to see if they are willing to do so at no costs.

Other issues since upgrade:

Loudspeakers also affected, but only during a phone call or FT/WhatsApp call and not working in GarageBand strange enough.. the speakers are working for music and other sounds.

Health app is not recording correctly

Battery discharges abnormally quick

Flaky Bluetooth conne

This is called an audio ic problem or the loop disease which is what they refer it too, it can be fixed if you force restart your phone then when it turns on and it’s on the apple logo sign, you hold your finger on the right bottom area of the apple logo until the phone is fully on then let go and it should work, if it doesn’t it needs to get repaired with a professional to fix it

Do you not have insurance through your carrier ? I was told the same, all the 7 and 7 plus phones had the same issue. My husbands phone everything went out speakers mics and they did a full replacement no charge after 11 update. My 7 plus mic went out after 12.01.1 update, I took it in, they told me that it was indeed an issue through Apple and they sent it off to be repaired if possible. However they couldn’t repair so Apple did a full replacement. I am hoping that it does not become an issue again. I have already done the update again and no issue so far.
