IOS 12.0.1 Microphone Not Working

I updated and now my microphone does not work. I cannot hear anyone when they calls, cannot use Siri and cannot use talk to text.

If I reset network settings it all works for a litle while, then stops again. I have an Iphone 7 Plus.

After I upgraded my iPhone SE from 11.4.1 to 12.0.1, Siri no longer works, dictation only works via bluetooth or headset with mic, and front video will record but only records sound if connected to headset with mic. I find it hard to believe that this is a hardware issue with the front mic. All worked well before upgrading. I have tried a boatload of things, and chatted with Apple for 55 minutes. They recommended bringing my phone in. Anyone else have this issue? Any fixes?

Same problem with 7. No mic, no sounds in calls, no FT, no headphones. But sound works in safari and youtube.

I think that there is a lot of people that will never again buy iPhone after this. I was Apple fun.. I have old iPhone 2G - it still works on it’s old IOS without problems! But this projects were Steve Jobs projects, also 5s was last good iPhone.

Good luck people, i am going to find some nice android phone after 8 years of using iPhones :-/

This has actually been happening long before ios 12. It happened to me instantly after I upgraded to 11.3 and to hundreds of others as well. There are now multiple threads of users expressing frustration over this issue and Apple's (non) response to what is either their buggy software or crappy, badly manufactured hardware. In fact this issue first emerged back in the early spring. At first Apple was offering free replacements even to phones recently out of warranty but I guess that stopped once the scale and potential cost of the problem became apparent to them. They've stayed absolutely silent on the issue.

Same issue here,

iPhone 7 - updated to ios 12 and camera wouldn't work.

Then updated to ios 12.1 - camera started working but microphone wouldn't work, couldn't take calls/put phone on speaker, and plugged in headphones won't work, Bluetooth headphones work with calls and everything.

Spoke to an apple help person online - they advised to reinstall my phone with icloud, bought extra storage and still, I reinstalled and the problem was kind of fixed, phone call worked, then later on it was glitchy and the next time I tried to call after an hour of fixing it, it went back to the issue, I'm 100% sure it is the update because it was perfect before then. I've since tried everything, Resetting the settings, network, and the whole phone.

Really frustrating, cannot talk to anyone on the phone, or do videos. - Hopefully next update fixes issues.

I am experiencing the same issue with my iPhone 7. It started yesterday when listening to music through my wired headphones. My phone would just continue to play through the iPhone speakers as if the headphones were not plugged in. When trying to make phone calls, I cannot hear anything or speak to anyone, I cannot use Siri, and I cannot record voice memos.

I stopped by an Apple store today and they ran diagnostics and an audio test on it and my phone said it could not recognize the device when they plugged in their audio diagnostic tool. I was told that this was a "known issue with the iPhone 7's" but that Apple could not make repairs or replace my iPhone at no charge since it was outside of the warranty period. My only option was to purchase a new iPhone.

When i got back home and started trying things, I reset my phone to factory settings through settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset all settings. After this, I was able to use my headphones, hear people on phone calls, record voice memos along with all other things that were previously not functioning.

About 5 minutes later, my Phone is now cutting in and out of functionality for these features again. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

I am very disappointed with Apple due to the fact that they communicated to me it was a known issue, yet cannot help me resolve their problem. My only option is to purchase a new iPhone, which is not something I want to do right given these phones are rather expensive.

Am having the exact same problem with Iphone 7 Plus. Worked absolutely fine till I upgraded to iOS 12 couple of weeks ago. And now get the same error as the screen shot from basa71

Given this seems model specific and possibly linked to older Iphone, is this something that apple is recognizing as an issue from upgrading?

Hi,

I had the same problem with my Iphone 7 plus, when I updated the new OS 12.1. I called the apple support and it said there was a hardware failure on the microphone. I said it was very weird when both microns stopped working when I updated their new OS. Because my mom works as a technician, she called in to support, who only asked her hard-to-reset phone and then reset to factory settings. What she thinks is strange when she was clear that the phone worked before the update and wanted it to troubleshoot before she started installing it. Which is the way to do when troubleshooting problems that occur during upgrades.

When it did not work she called back and only then did a diagnostic test on the phone. According to that, the hardware problem with the microphone that the diagnosis had discovered already when the upgrade was done according to apple, is always a diagnostic test at these upgrades.

The strange thing is that the Iphone 7 has 2 microphones and what's the odds that both of the 2 microphones stop functioning at the same time ???

A micronphone will record audio in movie recording and one manages audio during phone calls.

Mom said it was a strange way to troubleshoot the problem with upgrades but they claimed it would only solve the problem with the phone.

How are they able to solve it when it's not even the troubleshooted phone before I restore it to factory settings, how are they going to get it already if it's their OS that caused the hardware failure when all the data is gone ????

I have a case with Apple Support. You others who have the same problem should require them to create the cases as it is clear in this link that their OS created a hardware failure on the phones?

It's horrible that they have only 1 year warranty on hardware, it should take more responsibility for errors that occur in connection with their updates. This is extremely bad advertising for them !! They should take more responsibility as this is an expensive product and they definitely do not take their climate responsibility and develop sustainable and quality products. Because the products do not even manage their own updates !!!!

This same thing happened to me in July. I called Apple, did a number of things to try to fix it with people over the phone (my husbands since the whole problem is I can’t make phone calls). Drove an hour to the nearest Apple Store and was told that it was a known problem, it would cost $300 to replace the phone with another 7 and they were replacing for free five weeks earlier. My phone was at that point about 7 weeks out of warranty. This just made me angry. I don’t want to buy a new $800 phone every year, that’s ridiculous and wasteful. I have still not bought enough another iPhone, I use Bluetooth headphones and am still not ready to fork over nearly a grand for something the company won’t stand behind. Apple used to be so reliable! I still have my iPad I bought several years ago, it works great! My MacBook will last forever as well. **** if it weren’t for their purposeful iutdating through iOS (a whole other issue...) my first iPhone still works! So upset by this still and wish they’d stand by their products better as they did in the past. I am not buying a new iPhone anytime soon.

i have the same problem after updating to ios 12.1.2. had to send my phone to apple store and pay for the diagnostic. now waiting for the verdict. they say it is probably a hardware problem. and i suppose apple will make me pay for it. i dont think this is fair. phone was just fine before upgrade. is there a way to escalate this matter?

and what happened to your phone? how much did u have to pay for?

The above instruction worked to get my phone working, but when I went to re-add my cards, it turned on multi-factor authentication which then logged me out of my phone. I now have no way to turn off multi-factor as I have no other trusted device and the appleid website no longer has the ability to turn off multi-factor. I'm just a wee bit frustrated. I can't believe Apple could muck up a release as bad as this.

Everyone out there reading this post trend - share with us your microphone issue. I have seen many posts in Portuguese, English and German. Apple, in respect to clients, should not be silent about this problem that is common to many iPhone 7.

If anyone find a solution, please share! After less than 2 years we all have to buy new devices? No, doesn't sound like a solution.

I have also been having this issue with my IPhone 7. I haven’t tried to resolve it with Apple Customer Support yet, but it seems like the results haven’t been very... helpful. This is the first real issue I’ve had with an Apple product, and I’m quite sad... I make frequent calls every day and having that feature stripped is a terrible burden. Please, Apple, fix this.

After talking with Apple Service and a smart technician it is 100% clear a hardware problem. As the phone is out of warranty there is basically nothing they are offering. Seems that this is a well know issue with the audiochip on the IPhone 7 that has a bad connection to the board (due to manufacturing issue, fall, whatever). The only way to fix this is to re-solder the chip - a quite difficult task. The official workshops from Apple does not do that in Germany. After some research I found a provider that offers that kind of service in Germany. However that repair will cost 150€ !!! As my phone is just a little bit older than 2 years I will do that step ...

I will report the result!
