hi lotus,

thank you for getting back.

i know what i could have done. but i have not.

in the pic, you can see the display pixels and the scratch. colours depend on viewing angle. since i can feel it, i am pretty sure it is a scratch. the annoying thing is not the scratch itself, since it is not so big, but rather these bright and changing colours.

from your experience, do you think disguising by applying a screen detector would help?

or maybe some other kind of fill could do the job?

thank you

If they are scratches, then removal is not possible - short of replacing the entire laminated screen. It was possible on older iPads (non laminated) to simply replace the top digitiser screen-layer, but with laminated (more expensive) displays, the entire assembly must be replaced.

The best medicine is to ensure that you don’t scratch your expensive screen in the first place. The best option is to invest in a glass screen protector - preferably applied when the iPad is brand new. Consider this to be a sacrificial part that you can easily and cheaply replace if you scratch the screen. Remember, it only takes one spec of grit under a finger (or the tip of th Apple Pencil), to cause irreparable damage to the screen.

If your screen has a minor scratch that isn‘t too deep, investing in a glass screen protector after the damage has occured might help to disguise the scratch. If the scratch is very minor, then the adhesive layer on the back of the screen protector might conform and help fill the scratch - providing a cosmetic fix. If you can feel the scratch with a fingernail, you may be out of luck.

It’s difficult to provide definitive advice from a picture alone.

The only way to see if the screen protector will help optically is to fit one and see for yourself - it certainly shouldn’t make it any worse. The glass screen protectors vary in cost between manufacturers, and, as you might expect, their quality and coatings tend to improve with price.

For your need, avoid a ”film“ type if screen protector. A cheap glass screen protector will likely cost you €15 - a good one (such as the Zag Glass+) for your iPad €30-35 - both being considerably less than a replacement iPad screen through Apple. If it helps (although unlikely to completely eliminate the problem) then you have cheap fix; if it doesn’t hide the scratch, you don’t loose a lot and still have protection from new scratches.

None of the glass screen protectors are permanent - they use a non-setting silicone-based adhesive.

To remove them after fitting, you simply (and very gently) place a fingernail under a corner and lift. The adhesive will “relax” allowing you to lift the glass away, leaving no adhesive residue. This is by design, thus allowing a damaged screen protector to be replaced as needed.

did some tests, a screen protector will not cover up my scratches in a way that would make them less obvious.

only way to reduce the rainbow effect is to fill the scratches with something. i did this successfully, but nothing sticks, so the scratches always reappear when the filling wears off. i tried normal glue, super glue, even polishing in tooth paste.

any ideas what would stick?
