Recent update error connecting to iPod

I updated iTunes last night and now receive the following error message: "The software required for communicating with iPods is not installed correctly. DO you want iTunes to try and repair it?" iTunes does not seem to be able to do so and now when I try and sync my iPod Classic, my computer no longer recognizes it.
