Lightning Headphones plugged into iPhone 7 but sound is still playing out of speakers. Headphones and Mic are not detected.

This morning I was listening to music on my iPhone 7, using my Apple lightning cable earpods without any issues. I simply unplugged the earpods and roughly an hour later I plugged then back into the lightning jack again. This time the sound was no longer coming out of the earpods, it persisted to play through the iPhone speakers instead. The headphones simply weren’t detected. I tried several times to removed and reinsert the earpods. I turned the phone off, and back on, only to have it get stuck on the Apple logo upon reboot. After restarting my iPhone over and over for 20 minutes, trying to get it load past the Apple logo, it finally booted up completely. However, since this event, no sound will play out of any lightning style headphones when plugged in. I have tried several different sets of lightning earpods as well. I have also tried them on an iPad Mini’s lighting port and a friend’s iPhone 7 (they all work fine on these other devices). On my iPhone 7 the sound will only come out of the speaker on the phone itself. On top of this, I am suddenly not able to make useful calls. When I try to use any application that requires the mic on the iPhone, it doesn't work. I can't send voice messages, or make calls with the phone. Even whilst recording a video through the camera app, no sound is recorded. I have updated the software and restarted it many many times. I have even cleaned the jack free of any debris (there was almost none) still the issue persists.

Has anyone experienced this and solved it? How?

Hello Grayson,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities! I understand that your iPhone 7 does not recognize headphones connected to your Lightning port and your microphone does not work as expected. You've done some great troubleshooting steps to help resolve this behavior and I would be happy to help point you towards a resolution.

I would like to have you try to test the microphone on your device following the steps here:

If the microphones on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch aren't working - Apple Support

Then, follow the steps in this section:

If you still have issues after testing the microphone on your device, try these steps:

  1. Unplug any accessory plugged into the headset jack, and disconnect any Bluetooth headsets.
  2. Avoid blocking the microphone and iSight mic with your fingers or case while holding the device or recording video.
  3. Remove screen protectors, films, or cases that cover the microphone, iSight mic, or iPhone receiver.
  4. Clear any debris from the microphones or iPhone receiver. Refer to the user guide for your device on microphone locations.
  5. Restart your device.
  6. Make sure you have the latest version of iOS.

If you're still experiencing issues using headphones or with the microphone on your iPhone, consider visiting an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider ( Apple - Find Locations ) for further diagnosis. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail Store, make a Genius Bar reservation here:

Take care!
