My iMac makes a loud ding ding noise

I have a 2013 iMac iOS 10.13.6. It has never given me any problems. However for the last couple of months if my computer is left on for 5-10 mins and I go back to it, it makes a loud ding ding sound as though a key is stuck or something is pressing on the keyboard. (please bear in mind I am a 72 yr lady so may not get the jargon right). I have unplugged everything including peripherals. I have done various things recommended PRAM, removed a wireless keyboard which was within a couple of feet of my iMac. When the ding ding starts I can hover my cursor over a menu but the menu shows for a split second and flashes off again. I end up powering off. The fault is not always when I have left the PC on for a few minutes as mentioned above it happens at any given time and I cannot put a pattern to it. I can stop the ding by pressing any key but this does not mean the fault is clear it just means the noise has stopped.

I cannot seem to get in Safe Mode, tried every whichway. Restarting - pressing Cmd and R at same time, it just loads as normal. I have checked for a virus but all okay. Is it the end of my iMac's life!!!!

iPad (3rd gen) Wi-Fi, iOS 6.1.3

When I started reading my first thought was a hardware problem but after completing your post I'm pretty certain your computer is fine and that it is a program that is causing your mystery. One of the active members here has created a diagnostic tool called EtreCheck that is useful to those of us who answer questions. You can download it here and after you've run it paste the results. Among other things it shows us what programs you have running. That's where I suspect your problem is hiding.

You were booting into a new account and for a couple days things were working okay...until they weren't. So my first question is this: did you install any software or move anything around during that time? If this is a hardware problem I would expect the computer to continue acting up even after logging into a new account.
