I am trying to reinstall OSX High Sierra on my MacBook Pro from mid 2009. However, the only drive that shows up as an installation destination is “OSX Base System.” My internal toshiba hard drive does not even show up as an option. In the disk utility, the Erase mount and journaling options are grayed out. I am only able to run first aid which shows everything checking out ok. Whenever I try to partition the drive, it says the drive is not journaled.
If you are using the disk Utility in High Sierra, you must select Device-View and stead of the completely-useless default.
Then select your drive by Hardware-name, and you can manipulate the whole drive, or select a single partition.
If the Disk Utility doesn't show the internal drive, it's either dead or not properly connected. Resolving either requires a hardware repair.
If it does, use the First Aid or Erase function on it.
The Base System entry is the recovery system, not the internal drive.

The disc utility shows the internal drive but the drive is not shown during OS X installation. I do not have the option to erase mount or journal in the disc utility as the butttons are grayed out.
