Help with importing MP3's on a MacBook to iTunes

Hello, I have some mp3 files on my MacBook and I need to put them into iTunes so I can transfer them onto my iPhone but I have no idea how too do this. I'm very new to the MacBook and not very clued up so of course I started but trying to drag & drop but that didn't work, I've tried to do file and 'add to library' but that doesn't seem to work either. I'm clearly doing something wrong but I'm useless with iTunes and my husband is not here to help me and I'm very frustrated as I wish I understood all this 😟 Can anyone help please?

If you drop a folder of media files into the Automatically add to iTunes folder inside the iTunes Media folder inside your library the files should be added to iTunes and moved to where iTunes thinks they belong. Any files that iTunes doesn't know how to deal with should end up in a Not added sub-folder. It won't help you determine what the problem is but at least you'll know you weren't ignored. You can look for common features in the files that iTunes rejects.

Thank you for your response! Sadly, this just proves how rubbish I am, I actually noticed that the songs I want to move are actually wma files rather than mp3. Basically because I don't have an eternal cd drive for this MacBook, I asked my dad to rip the cd's for me and transfer the files onto a memory stick. I naturally assumed they would be in the mp3 format so I didn't even check, which I'm guessing could be a factor in my issue! I did have a look myself to see if I could convert them to mp3 via iTunes but the command wasn't highlighted for me to select so there's obviously something I'm not doing or doing wrong anyway. I've never understood iTunes so I need someone to walk me through it baby steps! I hope you can help?

Brilliant! Thank you so much, I have used Media Human (never heard of it before!) and now have all my songs on iTunes and my phone! 😀

Thank you for your help, but before I leave you alone completely, I just wanted to check if it's normal for your playlists to be screwed up when you've synched your phone to iTunes? After I sorted my song issue out, I synched my phone but when I checked my playlists, I noticed that half the songs on my current playlist had been removed (they're still on the phone though). If this is normal then that's fine, but it's very frustrating having to create/edit my playlist each time I sync my phone 😟

Does this happen to you?

iTunes syncing is predominantly from library to device, although updates to playlists, ratings, and play counts etc. should be able to flow the other way too. You are expected to move your library to a new computer when you want to change which computer you manage your device with, and keep your library backed up. See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device if there is media on your device that isn't in your library. Syncing shouldn't be able to remove anything from the iTunes library. If that has happened something very odd is going on.

Can you describe what you mean by a messed up playlist? Playlists can be sorted on different fields in iTunes, but what gets synced to a device is something called the Play Order, which is typically the order the items were added to the list if you haven't made any effort to sort them differently. If you see the list the way you want it in iTunes you can right-click the playlist name in the sidebar and use Copy to Play Order. If you then sync you might find things are ordered the way you want on the device.

I think I understand what you are saying but I do struggle with using iTunes. I've never found it user friendly and it does confuse me. Admittedly I'm not very good at syncing frequently so when I do, I tend to forget how to use it properly! Basically, when I download a song from iTunes onto my phone I add it to a playlist I have created. I understand that it stays in my list of songs on my library but for example, once I moved the xmas songs into iTunes on the computer yesterday, I then moved them via my phone into my 'Christmas' playlist which I had created. I was disappointed to only find one song in that playlist when I had already moved an entire xmas album several months back so I now have to find time to move them all back onto that particular playlist. Likewise, the 'September 18' playlist I had created included songs that I had downloaded over the summer as well as songs I had downloaded over the last couple of years which I added to that playlist too. After I had synced my phone with the computer yesterday, the only songs that were in this playlist were the ones I had added over the summer and not the ones from previous download sessions. Does that make sense?

I guess I use my phone more to create playlists and move songs around rather than doing it on the iTunes on the computer. Am I doing this wrong and should I connect to the computer more often and create/edit my playlists this way rather than on the actual phone itself?

Hi again! I've just created and managed a brand new playlist in iTunes on the computer and I'm just about to connect my phone to sync but I noticed that there's actually a load of songs that are on my phone still which aren't in iTunes on the computer at all so I can't move these over into my new playlist. Do you have any idea why these songs are on my phone but not on actual iTunes on the computer? Some of these songs were downloaded a couple/few years ago so it's really odd that they're not showing up. Sorry to keep harassing you with this but I'm sure by the time you've taught me all these things I'll be a pro in iTunes! 😀

iTunes will show your purchase history when you sign into a new computer. For the rest of your media you are expected to transfer your library in the same way that you would transfer other documents and data. See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device to reclaim any media that is on your device, but isn't in your library. Once it is all on your computer you can organize your playlists and decide what you want to sync back to the device.

Right ok, I've followed your instructions and I don't have a 'hidden' option, BUT I have clicked on 'Purchased' which was on the bottom and I've found the list of 165 songs which are on my phone but for some reason haven't made it into my library on iTunes on the computer. I can't seem to see any button which allows me to transfer them into the library but they all pretty much have the icloud symbol next to them. If I clicked on each song/icloud symbol what will happen? Will they then be downloaded from the include and into my library on the computer? I'm sorry to keep asking all these questions but I really don't understand all this and you are being so helpful, thank you

Sorry yes that's what I meant. I'm currently in iTunes on the computer and saw these songs in a list in purchases which 'are not in my library' I've clicked on the iCloud symbol next to each one I wanted and now I just need to know what to do next so that they appear so I can move them into the playlist I created earlier (on the computer not the iPhone)
