QuickTime screen recording drive target

We need an important option in QuickTime preferences, to be able to set an external drive for the temporary file creation that QuickTime does while performing screen recording. This file often can become very very big and it may not fit in the system drive. This option would increase the power of QuickTime and Apple creative set of tools.

I know I can save my recordings to an external drive after recording. But quicktime stop recording automatically when my internal harddrive is full. Thats not god enough. How do I save iMovie files to external drive? This is what i have been doing: open iMovie>file>open library>new>choose library>select external drive as destination for files>click save. What happens is that I then get a 175kb iMovie file showing on my external drive, which is plainly a very small file as the movie project I am attempting to save is between 8-10GB. I seem to be missing a step. Can anyone help?
