HDMI port on macbook pro taking long time to work

I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015) running macOS Mojave 10.14 although the same issue was happening on previous OS and I have also done a complete reinstall of the OS.

I have 2 external monitors, one via thunderbolt with connector to HDMI and the other straight HDMI. The thunderbolt connection works without issue but the HDMI input takes a while to start working, usually anywhere from a couple of minutes to half an hour.

I have tried different hdmi cables and different monitors and have tried all the tricks like opening Display and holding the Option button and also resetting SMC/PRAM etc.. with no success.

I am guessing it is the hdmi port or a hardware issue somewhere along the line? Once it connects it works without issue. If I leave it overnight sometimes it wakes that monitor without issue or sometimes I have to wait.

Hello smartfaceweb,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities! I understand that an external monitor connected to your MacBook Pro via HDMI does not wake when expected. You've done some great troubleshooting steps and I would be happy to help provide additional steps to take next.

Here's a resource that could help:

Get help with video issues on external displays connected to your Mac - Apple Support

Since you have already reset the SMC and NVRAM on the MacBook Pro, be sure to test if the display wakes properly in safe mode ( Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support ). If so, follow the steps in this section:

Check for third-party display software

If your display works only when your Mac is started in safe mode, and you have display-related software installed, check with the software's developer for updates, or try temporarily uninstalling it.

You may also want to check with the display manufacturer to confirm if there are any available updates. If there's no change to the current behavior, testing with a different user could help further isolate potential user related causes. If you don't have another account you can use for testing, here's how to create one:

How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac - Apple Support

Keep us posted with the results.

Cheers!
