Messages App hangs or crashes after Mojave upgrade

I've been all over the forums trying everybody's fix for this, but after upgrading to Mojave yesterday, my Messages app constantly hangs and/or crashes. If I am able to get it to run and stay open, it's constantly drawing on the resources of my Macbook Pro 2015

✅ Restarted into SafeMode and had the same problem

✅ Restarted and reset memory (COM + OPTION + P + R)

✅ Signed out of iMessages account, restarted and signed back in

✅ Changed setting to delete messages older than 1 year

I can't find any other solutions online, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

I'll pipe in too. New Mac Mini exhibiting all the Message problems previously discussed. I'm a little disappointed that we had some "genius" type offering major time-consuming fixes (reinstall from Time Machine backup and reinstall entirely new OS!), yet they completely disappeared after OP went to all the trouble to institute their solutions and faithfully reported back on the non-results.

Having a very similar problem, though not as bad as many users here outline. For me:

The message app often hangs while I'm typing a message, showing the spinning rainbow beachball for a few seconds. It's conspicuous because the system never balks at anything else I do like running multiple videos at once, editing photos, etc.

This is on my MBP 13-inch late 2016, running Mojave (10.14.2) with 2Ghz i5 processor and 8 GB memory.

After trying a whole bunch of things - clearing out messages, SMC reset, PRAM reset, etc. - I jumped off a cliff and installed the latest macOS 10.14.4 beta.

While I'm not condoning people do the same - and it could be more related to "clean/full upgrade" versus "dirty upgrade", Messages seems 100x better (back to old functionality).

Since FaceTime (audio calls) were cutting out and the FaceTime window was "disappearing" after hanging up from calls, I think there was more to issues with 10.14.3. That is, the release is a buggy piece of @&#!#@&*#.

I have the same issue. Far from acceptable when it freezes the whole system for about 5 seconds, not just the messages app. (running macOS 10.14.3 on MacBook Pro 2017 Touch ID)

Especially bad when in the middle of a call, video conference, etc. I've learnt my lesson and won't open it during a call anymore, but it should be fixed after so many months.

Did not mean to come across as critical - sincere apologies to anyone offended - I should have paid more attention to my post construction.

Now on the other hand, enough people have piped in with the same problem on non-MBP's, that the thread is more of 'There is a problem-with-Mojave' theme than 'Hey, what's going on with my MBP?'. The problem is obviously, to some extent, device agnostic, but a solution may be device specific in some cases. My post was for the non-MBP owners wondering why they couldn't access an MBP specific option.

Same problem here, crashes when I launch the app, have two different machines, both have latest updates, 2017 macbook pro 13" and a 2018 macbook Pro 13" the 2018 also has a clean system install and still has the problem.

Just get teh spinning wheel, sometimes crashes app and sometimes recovers after about 20-30 seconds... so frustrating, more of a Windows experience than a Mac one
