No Audio Output

The problem - Clip playback in FCPX is silent.

Using Mojave 10.14 / FCPX 10.4.3 on iMac Pro. Using Audio Midi Setup I have an aggregate device setup with the Speakers configured to a specific stereo pair on one of the audio interfaces. This setup works perfectly system wide and in other applications like Bitwig Studio (or Logic Pro X). The clip in question works in Quicktime and all the other software I have. However, in FCPX all I get is silence. Note: I can see the audio waveform in FCPX / inspector or the timeline.

Are there any settings in FCPX that configure audio?

Is this a known issue / are there any workarounds?

Thanks!

I tried creating an aggregate device, and FCP X is working with it without issue.

Did you try recreating the aggregate device with a different name and testing?

AFAICT it is not that FCP can't use aggregate devices, so it may be something with the specific device or some software issue. Does your aggregate device include a microphone or camera? Maybe the security settings may be getting in the way.

Just to make sure: when you select your aggregate device you don’t hear sound from FCP X? I suppose the same clips play sound if just the internal speakers are selected as system output.

Not sure if it would make a difference but you can try creating in Audio Midi Setup a multi-output device instead of an aggregate device. Does that work? FWIW I have used a multi-output device successfully.

Thanks for the response.

Correct - the aggregate device is selected as the default audio output device in the System Prefs. It works for the system and basically any other app, except FCPX.

I can switch the system to use the iMac Pro internal speakers - audio in FCPX can be heard.

Regarding the multi-output device. I can't use that because it concatenates all of the devices outputs into a single stereo output.

I also just tried using one of the audio interfaces by itself (i.e. not an aggregate device) - that also works.

After more investigation it looks like FPCX does not respect the arrangement / stacking of audio devices correctly. I can see the output from FCPX showing up on the wrong audio interface / output pair (not the one defined by the Audio Midi Setup app). It does seem like this is simply a bug with FCPX and aggregate devices.
