Health app step counter playing up overnight

Since October 9th, I have been having an issue with the health app on my iPhone. The issue is that on most (but not all) days, my health app will randomly record the same number of steps for a long period of time.

For example, my phone recorded 218 steps hourly from 2 PM on the 9th to 9 PM on the 10th; the next day, it recorded 421 steps hourly from 1 PM to 12 noon the next day. This was followed by a period where the step tracker was behaving normally. It returned October 15th recording 206 steps hourly from 12 noon to 6 AM the next morning.

I have inserted an screenshot of my health app from overnight. The issue started at 3 PM and continued at 12 noon. I was certainly using the phone between 3 PM and 1 AM and then from 9 AM through 12 noon.

I can take additional screenshots but they'll all show the same thing with varying amounts of steps.

Hey Ashleycoc,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities! I see that you're having some trouble with your Health app calculating incorrectly. I'd like to help out.

Try checking on this setting here:

If Health doesn’t track steps or other information from your iPhone or another device, try these steps:

  1. Open the Health app and tap the Sources tab.
  2. Under Devices, tap your Apple Watch.
  3. Tap Privacy Settings and make sure that Fitness Tracking is turned on.

Use the Health app on your iPhone or iPod touch - Apple Support
If you're still having trouble, try restarting the iPhone if you haven't already: Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Keep us updated on your progress! Take care.

Hi,

I have exactly the same thing. It only does it some nights but in the morning it’s recorded the same number of steps every hour all night. I assume it’s the amount of steps that I do in the last hour before bed as it’s different each time it does it. It has only started since the last update. The suggested solution from apple is irrelevant for me as I don’t have an I watch or use any other sources. I think it’s an issue with the latest update that they need to fix for the next update. It also doesn’t seem to update the steps as much as did before the update. So if I don’t look at it until the evening it will say no data for the day and I have to close it down and reopen it for it to show me the days step count. I hope they fix it soon!
