I just received a series 4 Apple Watch OS 5. I’m concerned because the ring on the Digital Crown is black instead of red.

The black ring on the Digital Crown means that your Watch is a GPS-only model, whereas the red ring means that the Watch also has mobile/cellular capability. You must have the GPS-only version.

What colour is the watch? Is it a cellular model? A quick scan through models pictured here Buy Apple Watch Series 4 - Apple suggests it is only the GPS+Cellular models that sport a red ring.
