iCloud storage

My iCloud drive warns me that it is full and shows that Documents are taking up most of the available 5GB. However, I have deleted or moved a lot of documents and when I look at iCloud drive info in Finder, only 1.2GB is used. It therefore appears that storage space is occupied by documents or apps that do not show in iCloud drive. How do I get to know what is using the iCloud storage space?

MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2014), macOS Mojave (10.14)

Hello and welcome to Apple Support Communities, anneliefrombrackenfell.
If I understand your post correctly, you are getting a warning message that your iCloud Drive is full and that documents are taking up most of the space but you show less than half of the space being used by documents in Finder. It's important to know how much space you still have available. I'd like to help.
First, restart your Mac and then take a look at the iCloud Storage directly by clicking on the Apple () menu > System Preferences, and iCloud, then click Manage. If the storage amount still appear off here, check to see if the recently deleted files are still being counted toward the total:

What if I don't see all of my files?

When you turn on iCloud Drive, any documents that you already store in iCloud automatically move to iCloud Drive. You can see your files on iCloud.com, in the Files app on iOS 11 and later, in the Pages, Numbers, and Keynote apps, or in the iCloud Drive app on iOS 10 and iOS 9.

If you don’t see your files in any of those locations, make sure that you set up iCloud Drive on all of your devices. If you don't see the files from your Mac Desktop and Documents folder on iCloud.com, go to System Preferences > iCloud, then click Options next to iCloud Drive and make sure that it's turned on.

If you need to access a file that you deleted within the last 30 days, you can get it back from the Recently Deleted folder in the Files app, or on iCloud.com. After 30 days, your files are removed from Recently Deleted.

On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  1. Open the Files app on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
  2. Go to Locations > Recently Deleted.
  3. Select the file that you want to keep.
  4. Tap Recover.

On iCloud.com

  1. Sign in to iCloud.com from your Mac or PC.
  2. Go to iCloud Drive and click Recently Deleted items in the bottom-right corner.
  3. Select the file that you want to keep.
  4. Tap Recover.

On your Mac

  1. Go to Trash.
  2. Select the file that you want to keep.
  3. Control-click, then choose Put Back. Or you can drag the file back to your desktop or iCloud Drive.

Dear Joseph_S

Thank you so much for your help. You did indeed understand my question correctly. I followed your instructions and the problem has now been resolved.

I have one more question, please. I recently did the iOS upgrade that my MacBook suggested and it is now running on macOS Mojave 10.14. The problem is that my MacBook is noticeably slower after the OS upgrade. The most noticeable feature is the time it takes to show me the screen where I enter my password after it had gone to sleep. Before, if I opened the lid, the page asking for my password was immediately displayed. Now it takes 6 seconds to display.

I enquired about upgrading the memory from 4GB to 8GB, but was told that it is not possible to upgrade the memory on my MacBook Air.

Do you have any advice for me, please?

Thank you

Annelie
