There are multiple things wrong here.
First of all, those instructions are old and apply only to Malwarebytes for Mac 3.0. They will not work properly with any later version of the software, which is why the Malwarebytes website has specific uninstall directions for older and newer versions of the software. If you downloaded and used that uninstaller with a recent version of Malwarebytes for Mac, it will not have been removed correctly.
In all versions of the software from 3.1 and up, you can uninstall simply by choosing Uninstall from the Help menu within the Malwarebytes app.
Further, Barney is absolutely incorrect. The link that would have been included in those instructions would have redirected to mbamupdates.com, which is a legitimate, Malwarebytes-owned domain. It is not a scam URL. I'm disappointed to see an error like this propagate, when the proper behavior of the link could be verified by visiting the uninstall directions on the Malwarebytes website.
OK, I understood. To remove "leftovers" you can also reinstall and then use the correct uninstall method.
Btw I noticed you use(?) Norton. ANY app from Symantic is poison on the mac (and alos on windows to be precise). If you have it, I strongly suggest that you get rid of it. It is VERY difficult to completely get rid of it, search here for good advice.
The post implies the download is from MalwareBytes. It is not. This technique is used to fool you into installing malware.
However, it appears that MalwareBytes actually redirects to that uninstaller, which is really poor form for an anti-malware company.
You have to search their support forum for instructions, and also download that file which is hosted on that suspect domain name.
First you open Malwarebytes and uncheck the "icon in the menu bar".
Then you open Settings->Users&Groups->LoginItems and remove the entry Malwarebytes (if it is there) with the minus sign underneath the list.
Then you uninstall the software with the Malwarebytes uninstaller.
Mmmm.... in that case they obviously fooled Norton as well, because I first scanned the file. Afterwards ran Norton again and it didn't come up with any notification or so.... The downloaded file has the same URL as the trustworthy (?) file on the Malwarebytes site itself. So bottomline I think it has been a save manoeuvre, but thanks for your attention!

Wim
It’s just a poorly designed domain that MBAM uses. They should be using a subdomain of MalwareBytes.com. The file is hosted on a domain that looks just all the scam sites set up to fool people into downloading malware.
If people didn’t download and install files from those malformed domain names, there’d be no need for MBAM.
Thanks for your help. As you can see in the thread there were some previous responses.
The software was already removed but I was frequently 'harassed'y pop up windows urging me to update the software. With the uninstaller (hopefully from a trustworthy source) I was able to get rid of that as well.
Cheers
haha thanks for the free advise. I'm just too scared to get evil stuff on my MacBook. So in the past few years of several Mac's Norton went 'on', 'off', 'on', 'off' etc...... Guess I will leave it here for a short while...
Great. I expected to find removal software on their website, but didn't find it. Thanks for your swift response! Have a nice day.

Wim
You were just fooled by a scammer
hi Barney, why do you think ? It seemed to have helped!
