iTunes won't recognise iPhone

Having problems connecting my iPhone 6s to my MacBook pro (touch bar).

I have a USB-USBc adaptor that I'm plugging it in with, and it automatically opens up photos but isn't' showing up at all in iTunes.

I've tried all the usual stuff: closing down iTunes and restarting, restarting iPhone, restarting the computer, trying all 4 USBc ports in the computer, trying a different cable - no luck.

I have also checked for updates for iTunes, security and iPhone and there's nothing to update.

Anyone got any ideas?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Download the current 12.8 installer for iTunes from https://www.apple.com/itunes/download/.

Unlock your iOS device and connect it to USB.

Reinstall iTunes from the .dmg that you've downloaded.

During the installation it should announce that a further software update is required.

Install that and iTunes should see your device.
