Safari unable to support the new version of Gmail

I always keep two different browsers open (in this case Safari and Chrome, both of which I also have on the iPhone), so that I can keep my work (G-suite) email and my personal email open at the same time.

Since Google released the "new" Gmail interface, Safari has been unable to handle it. From time to time it shows a tab with the message "Web page is using significant energy. Closing it may improve the responsiveness of your Mac" - and it really does! - or just stops updating. Sometimes refreshing the tab altogether works (although it loads veeeery slowly), sometimes the only solution is to shut down Safari and start a new session.

I thought OS X Mojave would solve the problem, but it still persists. I am using a 2013 Macbook Air with the newest 12.0 version of Safari.

I have tried to clear the cache, cookies, extensions, everything, but the problem is still there. Gmail works perfectly fine on Chrome, so the issue is really in Safari.

Any suggestions? Tks!

MacBook Air, macOS Mojave (10.14), Safari

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. Please post back on whether or not this worked. Also try the Safe Mode. Please post back on whether or not this worked.

Hi Eric,

thank you very much for your assistance! I have tried the first solution, of setting up another user account and Safari worked without any hitch.

I didn't have other apps open at the same time, so I've used and abused of Safari, playing music, videos and not closing any tabs for a good hour or so. In the end I had 15 tabs open and still no issue with any of them, including 2 Gmail accounts (personal and G Suite business addresses).

What is the next step you suggest? Put all my files in a shared folder, copy them to the new user and later delete the problematic user account?

Many thanks, again!

You are welcome. I am confused by the above. You had a lot of activity and the Gmail accounts worked? Was this in your normal account or the other new admin account. If it was in the new admin account, try booting into the Safe Mode in your normal account and see if that works. You can also run/post the Etrecheck report run while in your normal account (not in the Safe Mode).

Sorry if my last message was confusing.

As you've suggested, I've created a new user account and tested the new Gmail on this new user account using Safari. As my documents weren't available in this user account, nor had the Dock all other programs I usually use, I've decided to really put a strain in Safari opening 2 gmail tabs (personal and G Suite business addresses) and not close any other tabs while navigating. I've ended with 15 tabs open without any performance issues.

This leads me to believe that my original user account has some kind of problem. Anyway, here is the EtreCheck report I've obtain running the app in my computer:
