Shutting the lid logs me out even though the box is unchecked

Before installing Mojave, I could close the lid of my MacBook Pro, then open it up later and resume work where I left off. Now, each time I close the lid, it logs me out. When I re-open the lid I see the white apple and the progress bar, then the login screen. After I log in, my programs are all closed. It doesn't matter whether it has been 2 seconds or 2 hours.

Hi friEdTechAmy,

Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities. I see your Mac appears to be starting up when you open the lid, rather than waking from sleep.

There are a few possibilities for this. A likely explanation is FileVault running on your Mac; if Filevault is enabled, it would be normal to be prompted for your password. You can find more about FileVault in the article titled Use FileVault to encrypt the startup disk on your Mac . Here's how you can check to see if it's enabled and, if you wish, you can turn it off here as well:

Turn off FileVault

If you no longer want to encrypt your startup disk, you can turn off FileVault:

  1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Security & Privacy.
  2. Click the FileVault tab.
  3. Click User uploaded file, then enter an administrator name and password.
  4. Click Turn Off FileVault.

Decryption occurs in the background as you use your Mac, and only while your Mac is awake and plugged in to AC power. You can check progress in the FileVault section of Security & Privacy preferences.

If you find that FileVault is not enabled on your Mac, you might try a reset of your System Management Controller next, referencing the article titled How to reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac . There are a number of situations where an SMC reset is helpful, and your description of the issue touches upon a few of those:
How to know if you need to reset the SMC
  • Your Mac doesn't respond when you press the power button.
  • Your Mac notebook doesn't respond properly when you close or open the lid.
  • Your Mac sleeps or shuts down unexpectedly and you can't turn it back on.

Here are a few quick steps to try before the SMC reset:

Before you reset the SMC

Try each of these steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after each step to see if the issue still occurs.

  1. If your Mac isn't responding, press and hold the power button until it shuts down. You'll lose unsaved work in any open applications. Then press the power button again to turn on your Mac.
  2. Press Command-Option-Escape to force quit any application that's not responding.
  3. Put your Mac to sleep by choosing Apple () menu >Sleep. Wake the computer after it's gone to sleep.
  4. Restart your Mac by choosing Apple menu >Restart.
  5. Shut down your Mac by choosing Apple menu > Shut Down, then press the power button again to turn on your Mac.

If you're using a Mac notebook that's having power or battery issues, follow these steps:

  1. Unplug the power adapter from your Mac and the electrical outlet for several seconds, then plug it back in.
  2. Choose Apple menu > Shut Down.
  3. After your Mac shuts down, remove and re-insert the battery if it's removable.
  4. Press the power button again to turn on your Mac.
If the issue persists after you try the above, here's how to reset the SMC:

If the battery is nonremovable:

  1. Choose Apple menu > Shut Down.
  2. After your Mac shuts down, press Shift-Control-Option on the left side of the built-in keyboard, then press the power button at the same time. Hold these keys and the power button for 10 seconds. If you have a MacBook Pro with Touch ID, the Touch ID button is also the power button.
  3. Release all keys.
  4. Press the power button again to turn on your Mac.

I hope these steps help.

Take care.
