How do I get photos from my camera disk into my photos on imac

I seem to have difficulty when trying to upload my pictures from a disk off of my camera. My Canon camera disk.

When I click on photos and open it it only shows photos that are still continuing to upload from my phone or iPad. 13,000 of them and I can't see to view what I wish to upload from the camera disk.

No clue what to do or how to go about it. I assume a program would automatically open when I inserted the card/disk into the back of my iMac but it does not.

Help

iMac, macOS Sierra (10.12.5)

Can you see the photos on your camera disk, when you launch Image Capture?

You can use Image Capture to save the camera photos directly to Photos or to a folder on your Mac.

Have you taken your photos in a RAW format? If yes, is the RAW format of your camera model supported in Sierra?

So is image capture a program that will automatically come up on my system. and then I upload pictures to that from my disc?

Yes. With the memory card in the card reader launch Image Capture. The card will show at the top of the sidebar. Select it and go down to the bottom of the sidebar and set the "Connecting this camera opens:" to Image Capture.app:
